As a highbrow political commentator, author and talk show host, Tavis Smiley was perhaps the unlikeliest contestant on this season of Dancing With The Stars.

And his visit to the world of reality TV was extremely short-lived as he was sent home on Tuesday in just his second week on the dancing competition show.

Tavis - who said he entered the dance competition to do 'one last silly thing' before turning 50 - had failed to win over the audience and was voted off even though he was not the lowest scoring dancer.

Going home: Tavis Smiley was sent packing on Tuesday's episode of Dancing With The Stars

He blamed the pressures of being on the road for a book tour as making dance rehearsals with partner Sharna Burgess virtually impossible.

And despite wearing a wild 70s disco outfit, including a wig that he joked was the first time he has had hair 'since 1972', he failed to relax and win over the judges.

'I know you've had a tough week, but unfortunately it showed,' judge Len Goodman had told him.

Tavis was sent home ahead of NASCAR star Michael Waltrip, who scored four less points than him but whose dry humor must have won over viewers who gave him more votes.

Tough week: Tavis was on a book tour and couldn't rehearse with partner Sharna Burgess and it showed

'I do not live a life of regrets,' Tavis said as he was about to leave the show, insisting also that 'the art of dance I absolutely love'.

But he insisted it was his crazy schedule that had made rehearsing impossible.

'Like anything in life, it takes time to perfect it, and if you're on a book tour you only have eight to ten hours to do it,' he said. 'I don't care what it is, you have to spend time at your vocation perfecting it.'

However, he stressed: 'It's been a wonderful experience. I loved it.'

Lolo Jones was eliminated last week and with Tavis' departure there are 11 contestants remaining.

Former NASCAR champ Michael Waltrip, 51, had seemed certain he was heading home - and his pro partner Emma Slater was so thrilled when they knew they were safe she leaped up and wrapped her legs around his waist.

Earlier Michael had admitted his nerves were 'a little bit over the top right now'.

'I literally came here to figure out who I am,' he said. 'What lives in here? I wanted to explore my boundaries, find out how I fit in here out in Hollywood. And I'm feeling pretty good so far.'

Asked by co-host Erin Andrews if he had found who 'lives in there', he quipped: 'I can drive in the HOV lane by myself - there's a lot of people in here right now.'

Fans got to see two musical guest spots, with Nico & Vinz taking the stage first, having show pros Karina, Peta and Val dance as they sang their hit Am I Wrong.

But pop star Sia, wearing a long black coat and red shoes, gave a far more surreal performance of her hit Chandelier, keeping her back totally turned from the audience throughout.

Instead, everyone got to see an unusual expressionistic modern dance piece by DWTS pro dancer Allison Holker alongside 11-year-old Maddie Ziegler from Dance Moms.

'She's decided not to show her face and instead put the focus on the amazing dancing,' Erin Andrews explained.

Fans also got to see Janel Parrish and Valentin Chmerkovskiy repeat their week 2 dance as they were voted to do the encore performance, as well as a short comedy sketch in which contestants were shown as if they were in major movies.

It included scenes where Betsey Johnson and Tony Dovolani were in Ghost, Alfonso as Rocky but in a movie called 'Stocky', and Leah Thompson in Back to the Cha Cha.

Viewers also voted to see Mark Ballas in his audition tape for the show, with the pro cringing at having double earrings and nervously making jokes to the camera.

After Mark was scene describing himself as 'cute, breaking the rules', host Tom Bergeron joked: 'David Brent the dancer over there.'
