Country star Kellie Pickler and her partner Derek Hough performed a freestyle dance on Monday night that was so beautiful it inspired the rarest of responses from a reality TV judge - genuine, heartfelt tears.

Judge Carrie Ann Inaba was left sobbing after the passionate rendition - signalling that the routine could ultimately win season 16 of Dancing With The Stars.

Derek also showed emotion as he recalled how he almost missed the amazing partnership.

Passionate embrace: Derek Hough and Kellie Pickler imbued their freestyle performance with real emotion on Monday night

Gushing: Carrie Ann Inaba was left in tears after watching Kellie and Derek's winning performance

Kellie’s blonde partner gushed: 'I wasn't planning on doing this season, and last minute I had this weird feeling - and now I know what that feeling was, it was Kellie. It's been a truly amazing season.'

But it was Carrie Ann who had the most to say, exclaiming: 'Kellie, you just bared your soul on the dance floor - and it was one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. Thank you.'

The slow, sensual dance to Beneath You're Beautiful by Labrinth came at the perfect moment for Kellie - the last dance viewers see before the final round of voting decides the latest winner to be announced on Tuesday night.

Trusting partners: The blonde duo demonstrated a profound chemistry during the heartfelt performance

Heart stopping: Derek bent Pickler over in a dramatic show of emotion

The freestyle dance - in which finalists can do whatever they want - has often proven to be the decider in previous seasons.

And even though they did not end the night on the top of the leaderboard after three dances on the final night, the response from the judges - as well as tears in the eyes of numerous other audience members - would suggest Kellie must be a favourite.

As well as Carrie Ann's tears - leading to a big hug from Carrie as the judge repeatedly told her 'beautiful, beautiful' - the duo also got a heartfelt standing ovation from Len Goodman during his comments.

Fitting end: Kellie held her partner close as the dance came to a climax

Winner: Kellie and Derek's routine won over the audience

'Good dancing embraces the brain - great dancing embraces the heart,' Len told them before slowly rising to his feet.

'You did a dance of spell-binding beauty,' Bruno Tonioli agreed. 'That really was a contemporary work of art.

'And what art does, it speaks to you, it touches everybody, and I'm sure you reached the nation tonight with that performance.'

Perfect score: All three judges gave Pickler and Hough perfect 10s resulting in a final score of 30 for the freestyle dance

Fated: Derek opened up about his gratitude for the opportunity to work with Kellie

Tearful score: Kellie joined Carrie Ann and Hough in the emotional display

'If he gives you a seven tonight I'll kill him myself,' host Tom Bergeron quipped to them as they walked off stage.

But of course they got perfect tens from all three judges - with Len saying: 'Should be an 11.'
Kellie insisted her dance partner was the inspiration, saying: 'Derek has taught me so much - not just about dancing, but about life.

'And this performance tonight was about trust, and letting those walls down. You have to trust one another when you are out there on that floor - especially when you're slinging each other around!'

Jump and jive: The pair of blondes were clearly having a good time earlier in the night with a nostalgic Viennese Waltz dressed in costumes reminiscent of old Hollywood glamour

Funny man: Len Goodman was so impressed by Kellie and Derek's waltz that he said he almost flatulated out of excitement

Kellie and Derek also got perfect scores for their first dance, a quick step where they were dressed in white and recalling the golden age of Hollywood. 'I tell you what: 'I was palpitating, perspiring - I got so excited I was almost flatulating,' Len told them, while Bruno called it 'technically a tour de force'.

But they were still a point behind the night's leaders, Disney star Zendaya Coleman and partner Val Chmerkovskiy, who also got perfect 30s for their dances - and a bonus five points for winning the 'cha cha relay'. Kellie came second , getting four votes.

Zendaya and Val's leader board position was all the more amazing as the pro dancer was injured in rehearsals just an hour before the live showtime.

The big score: Zendaya and Valentin Chmerkovskiy also scored a perfect 30 with the judges

Air time: Zendaya clearly trusted her partner

Winners: The duo scored the biggest on Monday night, solidifying their place as the judges' favourite

'She accidentally hit me in the eye with her elbow - it happens. I've been hit in the face many times before,' Val said nonchalantly as audience members gasped at footage of him with blood pouring down his cheek.

'I was nervous that I wouldn't be able to dance for legal issues. But I'm good, you know. I'm good and I want her to enjoy the moment and focus on herself.'

Their first dance was a samba, with Zendaya in a stunning red dress, which Carrie Ann called 'magical' and Len called 'eye-popping, show-stopping, jaw-dropping'.

Injured: Valentin was hurt during rehearsals as Zendaya accidentally hit him in the eye with her elbow

Danger room: The winning dancers took to the rehearsal floor resulting in Valentin getting a little bloody

Acrobatic: Alexandra Raisman and Mark Ballas performed a pole dancing routine

'You're just incredibly fierce, child!' Bruno gushed.

Their freestyle was Zendaya a mix of dance styles with a chorus of kids to help.

'You showcased why you are such an incredible role model,' Carrie Ann told her. 'You're classy, you're sassy, you're fun - you're just divine, my dear.'

Flamboyant showing: The gymnast and the pro dancer pushed the limits with a genre bending dance medley

Big number: Mark had to overcome his fear of heights for the performance

Third on the night was Olympic gymnast Alexandra Raisman and Mark Ballas, whose first dance, a samba, had Len getting excited about their 'hot sexy moves', while Bruno gushed: 'You scrumptious little tease you!'

But they got just two nines and a 10 - two points behind the others - and came in third in the 'cha cha relay'.

They still managed a 10 in the freestyle, with a futuristic dance using gymnastic moves and even pole dancing - despite Mark's hate of heights.

Renamed: Len dubbed the Olympian 'Alexandra The Great'

Fear factor: The gymnast helped Mark triumph over his vertigo during their rehearsals

'You guys took me down memory lane because back in the day I worked a pole on Madonna's tour' Carrie Ann told them excitedly.

'That was one of the most amazing routines I've seen on Dancing With The Stars,' she told them.

'You never stop pushing your boundaries.'

Athletic showing: Jacoby Jones and Karina Smirnoff performed a heart pounding rendition for their freestyle routine

Bottom of the night: Despite landing first place the previous week the footballer and the dancer made it into fourth place on Monday

Len said he 'loved the concept' and added: 'I'm dubbing you Alexandra The Great.'

Coming up last was American football star Jacoby Jones and his partner Karina Smirnoff who had ended the previous week at the top of the leader board - their first time in the top spot.

They failed to live up to it on the final night before judging, however, getting 27 out of a possible 30 for their jive.
