TEACHING the world to sing may sound like a trite verse from a summer camp song book.
But when it comes to The Voice franchise, Australia can now claim credit for just that, after a Dutch conference of international format license holders turned into a love-in about the Channel 9 blockbuster.

The Voice Australia's executive producer, Julie Ward admits feeling like ''the teacher's pet'' at the meeting in Amsterdam last week, which drew together 23 of the 44 countries which own rights to the TV talent brand.

Led by Dutch creator John de Mol, the two-day seminar proved a master class by the Aussie contingent from local production house, Shine Australia, with the world clamouring for their secrets to its success.

And with Channel 7's The X Factor adopting some of the tricks for its live shows this week - including a social media host in Johnny Ruffo - Ward's top five tips are clearly worth noting.

Harnessing the online audience and keeping them engaged long after the winner was lesson number one, Ward said, with most shows now including real-time viewer tweets and Facebook voting.

''It's just not enough to crown the winner and then leave your audience hanging in a sort of off-season. You have to keep them engaged,'' she said.

Voice fans have been kept involved in the series two audition process, with entries ''sampled'' on the website each week (applications for season 2 close this Friday).

Recording all performances for sale on iTunes was also an initiative international Voice formats will copy, a lucrative business for global music partner, Universal.

Keeping the microphones on the coaches' ''unguarded moments'' also added to the voyeuristic experience, while contestants' back stories will be built over the course of the series, not just in sizzle

Everyone fell in love with Keith Urban in the Australian version of the Voice, but he did not sign up again for 2013. He signed up with American Idol instead. The replacement judge and mentor is Ricky Martin.
