As tonight's Dancing with the Stars opened, there were five contestants tied in last place... poised on the precipice to leave the show.

Jack Wagner, Sherri Shepherd, Gavin DeGraw, Melissa Gilbert and Gladys Knight all scored a dire 24 points last night, and were in real danger of being sent home.

A benevolent Len Goodman said kindly: 'No one deserves to go home tonight.'

Good loser: Jack Wagner seemed shocked but took his defeat good naturedly

William Levy and Cheryl Burke looked fairly safe with 28, while Maria Menounos and Derek Hough were close behind with 27 thanks in part to a very sexy rumba.

Roshon Fegan and Jaleel White trailed behind with 25, but it still put them above the bottom quintet.

Seal opened the show with Lean On Me, aptly enough given the contestants tendency to cling to their pro-partners like particularly committed limpets when the crunch moment comes.

Surprise: Nobody expected Jack to say goodbye, least of all his dancing partner Anna Trebunskaya

Hanging in there: Gavin DeGraw was unsurprised to be in the second two but lived to fight another day

Relief: But another favourite, the legendary Gladys Knight, remained in the competition

The Macy's Stars of Dance performed and then Rascal Flatts took the stage to sing Changed.

Host Tom Bergeron announced then announced a twist.

After next week and for the next three weeks the bottom two couples will dance simultaneously for the judges and the judges will decide who goes home.

But tonight, Gavin DeGraw, Gladys Knight and Jack Wagner had to hold their breath as they occupied the last three spots.

Not going anywhere: Welsh opera singer Katherine Jenkins and Mark Ballas scored highest with the judges yesterday

We're right behind you! Maria Menounos and Derek Hough weren't far behind with 28 points

Middling: Cheryl Burke and William Levy are safe but not setting the competition alight

Gladys was called as safe, as the crowd cheered, leaving Gavin in the seconf two again with firm favourite Jack.

Gavin seemed resigned to his departure and said: 'I'm a repeat offender.'

But it was star of Melrose Place, The Bold and the Beautiful and General Hospital favourite Jack who got his marching orders.

Preparing to up his game: Kym Johnson's star Jaleel White will channel his 'black Mick Jagger' for next week's rock night

He said: 'I had a great time and it was fun to test myself.

'Thanks to the judges and good luck to everyone else!'

And with a dignified last dance to the ballad, Where Do Broken Hearts go? he waltzed into the sunset.

Getting ready: Maria Menounos and Anna Trebunskaya arrive at rehearsals earlier in the day
