COUNTDOWN bosses last night solved the conundrum of who will take over from host Jeff Stelling... by hiring The Apprentice star Nick Hewer.

Lord Alan Sugar’s right-hand man, 67, is thought to have beaten off competition from Sue Barker, Liza Tarbuck, Terry Wogan, Aled Jones, Rory Bremner and show regular Giles Brandreth to land the afternoon TV job.

Hewer signed the deal with Channel 4 chiefs yesterday.

An insider said: “He was so witty and charming they were just blown away.”

Stelling decided he wanted to concentrate on presenting football on Sky Sports and when he tried to do a U-turn he was told bosses were looking for someone new.

Hewer will start filming alongside maths beauty Rachel Riley, 25, next month ready to appear on screens for the first time on January 9.

The deal allows him to stay on with BBC1’s The Apprentice, for which he is known for his eye-rolling and caustic comments.

Hewer, a dad of two and grandfather of four, was Lord Sugar’s Amstrad PR man for 27 years and was initially reluctant to join his boss on the business talent show, saying he did not “crave the limelight”.

He lives in a luxury home in Northamptonshire and will travel to work in Leeds, where Countdown is filmed.

Hewer is the fifth host in the show’s 30-year history. Richard Whitely presented the show for 23 years from 1982 until his death in 2005. Des Lynam took over but quit after becoming annoyed with commuting.

Des O’Connor was in the chair from 2007 until 2009 when Stelling, 56, landed the role.

A Channel 4 spokeswoman said last night: “We are absolutely delighted to have Nick on board.

“He is such a fantastic character and has a huge fan base so he’ll make a great addition to the team.”
