TV legend Bruce Forsyth has launched a stinging attack on the X Factor – branding the ITV1 hit “embarrassing”.

In a revealing interview with the Mirror in which the 82-year-old star calls for knighthoods for British comics, he claims Simon Cowell’s show is not entertaining.

Speaking from his Surrey mansion, Brucie reveals: “It’s not my cup of tea, I haven’t watched an entire show. I can’t hear people singing for two hours, that to me is not entertainment.”

He pauses, then adds: “I’m an old variety performer, I want to see a juggler, or something to break it up. I hate seeing people disappointed in public. It can be embarrassing at times.” And questioning the razzmatazz which surrounds the show, he says: “Bigger venues and the pyrotechnics made it much more of an event last year.

“Sometimes it was like a firework display with someone singing to be voted on. The electricity bill must have been enormous.”

But while the popular host cannot understand the obsession with this search for new stars, he also believes he and other old-school comedy heroes haven’t got the recognition they deserve.

Brucie reckons his fellow comics have been overlooked for knighthoods because their profession isn’t deemed a “proper job”.

He explained: “Do the people in charge think making millions laugh is less important than being a great actor, sportsman, or pop star? Getting a laugh can be very hard work. It’s so fine-tuned. Great comics like Morecambe and Wise, the Two Ronnies, Tommy Cooper and Les Dawson were more than worthy of being knighted.”

Brucie adds: “Do those in charge not think we’ve got a proper job?

“Maybe it dates back to jesters in the king and queen’s court when they were treated as buffoons. I’m very happy with my CBE, but if I get a knighthood it would be a great honour.”

The star, who has spent 68 years in showbiz, is unsure about his future. He is set for talks with http://www.mirror.co.uk/celebs/news/# - the BBC to discuss hosting another series of Strictly Come Dancing with Tess Daly, but says he hasn’t got a “gut feeling”.

Bruce, who is just back from Puerto Rico where he spends his winters with his former Miss World wife Wilnelia, 52, admits: “I’ll make up my mind a few months before. I’ll listen to my head and see how I feel.” Tonight, he appears on C4’s Comedy Roast where pal Jonathan Ross jokingly calls him “f*****g ugly”.

Bruce reveals: “It was all a lot of fun and a great evening. I thought it was funny being called ugly. I make jokes about my chin myself.”

Next week he starts filming the BBC’s Who Do You Think You Are? and will also host the last episode of this series of Have I Got News for You?

He jokes: “Bruce has been busy. When will I stop? When I can no longer walk on to a studio floor and feel 35. You never know when it’s going to stop. I’m still having fun making people laugh.”

That's mean. Millions of people love watching Brucie the legend, and that headline is misleading (as usual) he didn't say the whole show was embarrassing, just watching people getting disappointed in public.

He doesn't like x-factor, he doesn't find it entertaining, well, so what, he's entitled to an opinion the same as everybody else. I don't like the x-factor either for almost the same reasons.

I do wish people wouldn't read the tosh that comes out in the red tops (plus the daily mail) and then get so cross.

I'm not in the slightest bit cross, it was a throwaway comment like most of my posts here. By the same token, I don't find him entertaining or ejoyable to watch and that's an opinion I'm entitled to.

Bruce REALLY should retire, while he still has some dignity!
