A skate escape?

DANCING On Ice may escape the axe after next year’s series – producers are secretly working on how to bring it back without Torvill and Dean.

The Olympic skate duo have announced the 2014 run will be their last and ITV chief Peter Fincham declared the show would not go on without them.

But TV Biz have learned it may SURVIVE — with new skate pros brought in to coach the celebrities.

The show attracts more than seven million viewers on Sunday nights but is also one of ITV’s most expensive entertainment formats.

It is made by ITV Studios, which is part of the ITV empire, but separate from the channel bosses who decide what shows to air.

A well-placed source said: “The show is still massive for ITV.

“But when Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean decided to go, it gave Peter Fincham a reason to get rid of it.

“Yet many at ITV Studios think that was the wrong decision. Jayne and Christopher leaving is a big deal and it will be incredibly hard to replace them — but not impossible. To say that they are the only telegenic skating pros who could fill the role would be wrong. So watch this space.”

Each episode of Dancing On Ice costs £1million to make.

This year bosses paid a staggering £250,000 to hire former Baywatch star Pamela Anderson — far more than the £150,000 initially thought — for what turned out to be just a single show.

But the source added: “It’s fine to bin a show if it is pulling in only a couple of million viewers in prime time.

“But the world is not awash with shows that rate like Dancing On Ice does.”

I hope so because it would be interesting to see what routines the new coaches/pro's would bring.

Agree moonshine. All reality shows have the same problem.

One thing they could do is have an all star year like on DWTS.

We stopped watching a few series back, but would probably give it another go if T&D weren't in it and the pro skaters were given a chance to have more input. Wish T&D would take Karen with 'em when they go

I'm glad it's got a potential extension anyway. Karen would presumably not be safe once Dean goes. Hopefully that American doll would go too - oh and Christine Bleakley. Sounding better and better... Torvill and Dean aren't doing much any more on screen anyway.
