'Dancing With The Stars' 2013 Recap: Season 16, week 4 (Poll)

04/08/2013 by Cari Skillman

The headline from the beginning of week four: Where's Lisa Vanderpump? Her partner Gleb came waltzing down the stairs during the show open ... ALONE. I guess between dance rehearsals and her real life, "Real Housewives" commitments; Lisa's not taking care of herself. She fainted during one rehearsal session! Will she dance this week? Oh, of course she will! That's what troopers do!

The theme for week four is "The Best Year of Your Life." The celebrities chose a time period where something meant a lot to them, and then chose a song associated with that time. There's one other twist in this week's competition: The dreaded 15 second solo!

Here's a rundown of the scores, from highest to lowest score:

Aly Raisman and Mark Ballas -- 27 out of 30

No real surprise to learn Aly's best year of 2012; after all, she did earn two gold and one bronze medal at the Olympic Games! She gets to learn a Contemporary routine this time around, which is Mark Ballas' favorite style and works perfectly with Aly's "favorite year" choice. She gets to show off her years of gymnastics training during her solo. The judges are mesmerized and proud and each award her a nine.

Zendaya Coleman, and Val Chmerkovskiy -- 26 out of 30

It's hard to not feel like an underachiever when you hear this confident 16 year old talk! She chose 2009 for her best year because that's the year she was essentially "discovered" and got her big break in the entertainment business. It seems she's never looked back.

Val Chmerkovskiy gets to choreograph a Samba for her this week, which seems like the perfect dance for her hip-hop based style. Zendaya is channeling her idol Beyonce and doesn't seem to make a false move; at least, as far as Carrie Ann and Bruno are concerned. Len would have liked to see more "Samba content" in her solo. I guess there was a little too much Sasha/Zendaya Fierce.

Kellie Pickler and Derek Hough -- 26 out of 30

Kellie remembers 2011 as the best of her life. It's the year she married the love of her life, Kyle. The country star honestly reveals that her parents did not offer much in the way of security while she was growing up.

Once she had Kyle in her life, she said she found her sanctuary. Kyle's also a singer-songwriter and the song Kellie and Derek Hough dance to was written, and performed by, Kellie's main man. The Rumba is graceful and meaningful, and both Carrie Ann and Bruno gave the duo a nine for their effort.

Jacoby Jones and Karina Smirnoff -- 24 out of 30

You probably expected Jacoby would chose 2012 as his best year. But we learn it's not (just) because of his Super Bowl win. It's the year his adorable young son was born. Things get heartfelt with Jacoby when he tells us he grew up without a Dad, and he always wanted to have a son and be a major part of his child's life. He said he wants his son to grow up the right way, and not have to go through what he went through when he was a kid.

Um, wow. The sentiment is great, but not as wonderful as when we see the child himself. Dad dances his solo in front of the little one; I think Junior earned lots of votes for his dear old Dad. Len said he's a fan of that Foxtrot; and Carrie Ann called the dance joyous and expressive, but warned him to watch his booty placement in the future.

Ingo Rademacher and Kym Johnson -- 23 out of 30

Our soap star has been itching to up his scores with the judges and this week he does it. The Viennese Waltz, and the story behind it, is what pushes him up the rankings. Ingo's best year is 2009, the year he married his wife, Ehiku. The handsome Aussie says before he met her he had "things" to fill his life, but after her, his heart was filled.

Len praised his footwork; Bruno said he was elegant and dashing, and thanked him for taking their constructive criticisms to heart. Carrie Ann noted that adding "love" to any dance seems to make it blossom. Ingo added: "love, and give minute abs!"

Andy Dick and Sharna Burgess -- 21 out of 30

Viewers at home and in the ballroom seem to be throwing their love towards Andy. No, he's not the best dancer, but he does get better each week and he is this season's open book. He readily admits that 2013, right now, is the best time of his life because he's healthier and happier than he's been in a long time (not to mention sober).

He dedicates the dance to his 15-year-old daughter who's not just his biggest fan but also a bit of a mini-me in the personality department. It's a very sweet Viennese Waltz and easily his best dance yet. Bruno said the performance was straight from the heart; Len called him a hero; and Carrie Ann broke down in tears, gave Andy a big hug, and said the dance was like a simple, beautiful poem.

(Note: Carrie Ann Inaba lost her father days before the "Dancing With The Stars" season 16 premiere.)

D.L. Hughley Cheryl Burke -- 21 out of 30

D.L. is another of the season 16 underdogs. Even with some pretty rough comments from the judges, he's hanging in there for a week of the Foxtrot. D.L.'s favorite year was around the time of 8th grade; he says it's when his life was still innocent, and before things became "real."

He and Cheryl Burke dance to an Etta James classic and this week things all seem to come together. The dance is fun, and actually filled with content. And he gets a huge cheer from the in-house crowd! The judges are also pleased, with Carrie Ann calling this his breakthrough week. They give him his highest scores to date! And ever the jokester, D.L. says the 21 points are higher than his SAT scores! (drum beat, please!)

Sean Lowe and Peta Murgatroyd -- 20 out of 30

"The Bachelor" lucked out this week and his dance is the Viennese Waltz. It looks like he's finally learning something he could actually use at his alleged upcoming wedding to fiancee Catherine. And the aww-shucks moment came when Sean actually chose 2012 as his best year ever, because it's the year he met Catherine.

He tells Peta Murgatroyd he wants to incorporate his fiancee in the dance, so at the end, Sean danced, solo, over to Catherine and planted a big ol' kiss on her! Len was beaming and called it a good effort on a difficult dance. But Carrie Ann said the lift police was back, and the couple had two offenses!

Victor Ortiz and Lindsay Arnold -- 18 out of 30

Victor's best year was 2011 when the won his boxing crown. Lindsay Arnold choreographs a Paso Doble to the Queen song "We Will Rock You," which is the tune Victor used as he entered the ring for that match. For the performance, Victor gets the tough "bull fighter" part of the routine but he doesn't remember that some dance steps need to go along with it. Bruno said he should dance it, not destroy it; and while Len admired his determination, the dance needed more refinement.

Lisa Vanderpump and Gleb Savchenko -- 18 out of 30

After endless teasing of her fainting spell, Lisa limps out as the last dancer of the evening. She had a busy week; a quick trip to New York City plus rehearsals had her feeling under the weather. Lisa's chosen the year her daughter Pandora got married (and while they didn't mention the year on the show anyone who follows RHOBH knows it was last year).

But none of that really matters. The focus is on Lisa not feeling well. She faints. She goes to the doctor. She has a fever. She's tired. But She and her partner Gleb push through and perform a not so awful Cha Cha Cha. Gleb even takes off his shirt mid-dance to help pump up the points. The judges are very nice, and tell her she's given it a good shot. And then.. triple sixes.
