Melissa Rycroft and Tony Dovolani were overjoyed after being voted all-star champions of Dancing With The Stars on Monday night.

As the only couple out of the three finalists not to have won a previous season, The Bachelor star and her dance professional partner looked totally stunned when they were crowned winners over runners-up Shawn Johnson and Derek Hough.

As they hugged one another, the sound was also cut several times - suggesting that their shock even gave way to some choice celebratory language.

Celebrate good times: Melissa Rycroft and Tony Dovolani were crowned champions of the all star season of Dancing with the Stars on Tuesday night

The celebrations were so wild - with Tony climbing up on the outstretched arms of the other contestants - that he and Melissa didn't even get the chance to discuss their joy on air.

'This is usually where we would talk to them!' Tom said, instead he and co-host Brooke Burke stood by to watch the wild celebrations. and the obligatory confetti raining down.

Earlier, as they danced a Samba to Life is a Highway for their final performance, judge Len Goodman told them: 'You have been my greatest pleasure to watch - you have been fantastic.'

Joyous: Tony and Melissa held the Mirror ball trophy aloft among the other thrilled contestants dur8ing wild scenes of celebrations

Confetti celebration: The twosome looked like they could hardly believe it after beating Derek Hough and Shawn Johnson into second place

Well done, mummy! Melissa's adorable daughter, Ava Grace seemed mesmerised by the glitterball trophy

Thrilled: Melissa beamed from ear-to-ear as she posed alongside her baby daughter and husband, Tye Strickland

Bruno said: 'Oh you are turning into a South American siren. Slinky with a touch of rock and roll.'

And during rehearsals, Tony had said: 'I'm so proud of Melissa - nothing can bring her down.'

Despite a string of perfect scores in recent weeks, Melissa and Tony were not considered favourites - especially after Shawn and Derek scored perfect 10s from all three judges for their final dance, compared to the winners' lower 9.5s.

Excited: The couple were visibly shocked when they found out they had won the series

Success story: The couple performed their last ever dance - a Samba together after just an hour rehearsal

Shawn and Derek's high-energy cha cha to Respect also received the biggest standing ovation from the audience, which can sometimes reflect viewer voting preferences.

'One thing is for sure - you are going out with a bang!' Bruno told Shawn and Derek. 'That was perfection.'

Kelly Monaco and Valentin Chmerkovskiy were the first of the three finalists to be voted off after their jive to Cat and Mouse, with Bruno making it clear that the chemistry between them pair was their biggest selling point.

The final three: Kelly Monaco and Val Chmerkovskiy; Tony and Melissa, Shawn Johnson and Derek Hough were all hoping to win the first ever all-star season

Nail biting stuff: The couples all looked extremely nervous as they waited for the first results

'You two have the energy two young, randy rabbits going at each other - I tell you, something was going on there. The effect was magnificent,' he said.

Carrie Ann said any slips were due to 'body oil' slathered over Val, and told them: 'You have won the heart of the audience and you have won my heart.'

Rueful Kelly described the experience of dancing with Val for the last time as 'bittersweet.'

Encore: Derek and Shawn also performed their Monday night dance with members of the U.S. gymnastics team

Just not enough: Derek and Shawn's performance won them a standing ovation, but wasn't good enough to secure them victory

She added: 'Dancing with the stars has given me so much - a new added confidence, talent, friendships and a journey that will I think continue for a really long time.'

'I'm very proud of her,' Val said. 'I actually got a little emotional, which I don't usually get. I'm very proud to have been a part of that.'

But they provided the biggest disappointment of the night - finally insisting they are not a couple.

No win this time: Kelly and Val were not among the favourites to win and were the first to be eliminated

Bittersweet: Kelly said she would miss dancing with her 'good friend' Val

The crowd cheered and the couple hugged after Brooke Burke Charvet told them fans were 'dying to know what is going on.'

But instead of a clear confession, they kept it vague - defining their relationship as a friendship.

'Listen, I hope everybody could have friendships like this,' Kelly said. 'I mean this is what it is. It's the foundation of an amazing friendship. I know you're laughing but this is what it is,' she told the disbelieving crowd.

'Yeah, this is what it is,' Val said. 'Unconditional love for one another, whatever that label is. It doesn't have to be a boyfriend and girlfriend. It's a relationship I cherish - she can rely on me and I know I can rely on her.'

Final dance: Val and Kelly were voted off after performing Cat & Mouse as their last ever dance

Chemistry: Kelly paid tribute to Val's abilities as a dancer after their elimination

What's going on? Brooke Burke-Charvet quizzed the amorous couple on whether there was true romance off the dance floor

After they were voted off, Kelly said: 'This guy is the most incredible man and he's the most talented dancer out there. He taught somebody who had no idea how to stand on both of her feet and talk at the same time how to dance gracefully.'

The show had saved the toughest challenge of the season - with the performers only finding out live on air what style of dance they would perform and what song they would do it to.

The contestants pick out balls to reveal their dance for the night - giving them less than an hour in a small curtained off area to practice for their final dance of the season.

Best of the rest: The eliminated contestants from previous weeks were in the studio to dance and celebrate

These boots are made for walking: Pamela Anderson put in a steamy performance in a glittering basque and thigh high spray-on leather

Despite coming in second, Shawn had earlier in the show already made it clear she felt like a winner for just how amazing the season had been for her.

'This whole journey has been absolutely amazing and this is our last dance,' she said. 'So pressure aside we just want to have fun and finish off our journey on the highest note we can.'

In rehearsals, Derek ended up in tears as he spoke about working with Shawn.

She's back: Bristol; Palin took to the floor with partner Mark Ballas for an energetic number

Dip down: Bristol seemed overjoyed to back on a dance floor wearing a glittering white dress

'I couldn't have asked for a more amazing partner,' he said, tears streaming down his face. 'She has been a little light in my life, a little spark - I love ya. She's really inspired me, a lot, and given me confidence in myself.  To win the all stars would be the perfect ending.'

After their final dance - which Shawn called 'overwhelming' and 'bittersweet' to know it was all over - Derek stressed: 'Regardless of the result, it's been the most special season I've had.'

Shawn and Derek had also had to do an extra performance, having been picked by the judges to again show off their freestyle routine from the previous night.

Green machine: Sabrina Bryan returned to the floor with partner Louis van Amstel., after her shock elimination in week six

Time machine: Joey Fatone and Kym Johnson employed a couple of mini-me youngsters for their Back to the Future themed dance

Aiming high: Racing driver Helios Castroneves returned for a final number with parner Chelsie Hightower

As well as a recap of the season, viewers also got to see what might have been had their voting in earlier episodes been different, with the previously voted off contestants coming back for more.

After Pamela Anderson's particularly sexy routine - wearing a super skimpy sequinned outfit and black leather-looking stockings - host Tom Bergeron joked that it was a performance fit for a strip club.

'Usual to see something like that,  there's a two drink minimum,' he quipped.

But most contestants, including Bristol Palin, Helio Castroneves, Sabrina Bryan, Kirstie Alley, Gilles Marini, Apolo Anton Ohno, Emmitt Smith, played it straight with their dances.

Eastern theme: Gilles Marini and partner Peta Murgatroyd performed a Bollywood inspired number

Green machine: NFL star Emmitt Smith and partner Cheryl Burke were graceful in their final performance

Silver cloud: Apolo Ohno dipped Karina Smirnoff as they took the spotlight for their number

However, it was Drew Lachey's daughter Isabella Claire who arguably stole the show.

Calling the six-year-old his 'secret weapon,' Drew bought her on to help out with his and pro Anna Trebunskaya's performance to Crazy in Love.

'Its really exciting because I get to finally dance with my daddy in front of a thousand of people,' Isabella had said before the performance, with daddy Drew adding: 'This is going to make so many memories,' Drew said.

Stealing the show: Drew Lachey's daughter Isabella joined in with his final dance, much to the audience's delight

She's a hit! Drew described the six year old as his 'secret weapon' as he took to the floor with Anna Trebunskaya for a dance to Beyonce

'How many people actually get to dance with their daughters on Dancing With The Stars?'

Meanwhile, Joey Fatone featured in a funny pre-recorded sketch aired in which he went back in time to win the show.

He was seen in a Back To The Future DeLorean to tell the young version of himself to 'start learning your cha cha now' - so he could eventually win the show.

Cheering for the best: Several of the contestants performed a cheerleading-themed group dance, complete with pyramid

All star dancing: The troupe opened the show with a striking number

It's a strip: The celebrities lost their clothes to replicate one of the most popular group dances of the season - Gangnam Style

His performance then carried on from the sketch - with him jumping out of the Back To The Future car wearing a time traveller's outfit.

As well as the individual dances, viewers also got to once again see a series of popular group dances.

Four of the couples - all wearing bright coloured suits, sunglasses and wigs which they soon stripped off - also brought back the fan favourite performance of Gangnam Style.

Perfect score: Melissa and Tony's victory was a popular win among judges Carrie Ann Inaba, Len Goodman and Bruno Tonioli

Kirstie Alley, wearing a skin-tight bodysuit, already appeared to have put on a little of the weight she lost in the season - and Joey Fatone was perhaps not a wise choice to show off his midriff which wobbled wildly.

Even more disastrously, he attempted a spin and landed rather unflatteringly - and no doubt painfully - on his behind.

There was also a new team dance - this time to Carly Rae Jepsen's  Call Me Maybe - with the male dancers as American football players and the ladies appearing as cheerleaders, all with 'DWTS' emblazoned on their purple tops.

It's a wrap: Tuesday's show completed the first all-star season of the hit ABC show
