Striptease with the stars! Gilles Marini ends up shirtless with just a towel to cover his modesty, during strip-heavy Gangnam style DWTS team dance

Dancing With The Stars took the zany Gangnam-style dance to a new level - at least in term of sexiness on Tuesday's show.

As four of the remaining couples in the reality TV competition grouped together to perform a Gangnam-style routine they went all out for points - throwing in some impressive striptease.

It ended with Sex and the City star Gilles Marini shirtless in a towel wearing just a pair of tighty-whities - and hunky dance pro Valentin Chmerkovskiy also topless and showing off his abs.

Six pack display: Gilles Marini and partner Peta Murgatroyd stripped out of their bright suits to reveal their toned bodies during the Gangnam style team dance on Tuesday's Dancing with the Stars

And while not quite as revealing, Peta Murgatroyd also showed plenty of flesh with towels around her waist and breasts and also on her head, in white underwear while sexy TV star Kelly Monaco wore skin-tight shiny hot-pants.

Even before they started, the women, including Kirstie Alley were barely recognisable in short black wigs and brightly-coloured men's suits.

Host Tom Bergeron called the final routine 'the most fun I've had' on the show, and the judges seemed equally bowled over.

Strutting their stuff: Val and Kelly played up the humour in the hit song by Korean rapper Psy

Stripping down: Gilles, Kelly Monaco, Emitt Smith and Kirtsie Alley were among the celebrities stripping down in the Gangnam style number

'Gilles give me that towel - I'm wetting myself!' excitable judge Bruno Tonioli told Marini, inspiring the actor to whip off the skimpy towel he had over his tight white boxer briefs and throw it at him.

Meanwhile Len Goodman told them: 'That was the craziest number I have ever seen!

'It wasn't tidy, it wasn't together, but that should have come with a health warning, I'm telling you - I'm out of breath just watching it. It was fun.'

Towel fashion: Gilles partner Peta Murgatroyd ended up in white towelling style underwear during the number

Whipping up a storm: Cheryl Burke and Emmitt Smith ended up with few clothes on as they performed a whipping move

During rehearsals, the dancers seemed baffled at being made to do such a strange dance - and so decided to really ham it up.

'Our dance is really, really wild,' Kirstie warned. 'It's so wild that we are all going to end up in an institution.'

They started all wearing bright-coloured suits, the partners all matching, and having short dark hair.
But it was as each couple started their solo sections that they started whipping off their clothes, getting riskier with each couple.

Twisting the night away: The audience and judges were thrilled with the off-the-wall style of the team dance

Disco style: The eight celebrities and their professional partners made a striking sight in their various states of undress

Kirstie Alley revealed a jumpsuit while her partner and fan-favourite Maksim Chmerkovskiy was left in a bizarre get-up with a string-vest, tight green shorts and long socks.

Next NFL legend Emmitt Smith stripped down to a white t-shirt and yellow shorts, before Valentin then sent temperatures soaring as he went topless, showing his rippling six-pack while Kelly Monaco wore tight hotpants.

But Gilles went even further, with just a skimpy towel tied around his waist covering his tight underpants - a towel he had to adjust several times to keep the show from being too risqué.

A colourful sight: Team Gangnam began the dance dressed in multi-coloured suits and sunglasses

Rainbow bright: Kirstie Alley and partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy led the dancers in their routine

Partner Peta Murgatroyd also showed plenty of flesh in white underwear covered by towels - and at one point doing a handstand with Gilles giving a shocked expression as she opened her legs and he took a glance.

Carrie Ann Inaba called the whole thing a 'hot mess', saying: 'That was just so much fun. Sometimes hot mess is excusable and turns into crazy, fun insanity,' she added, bowing down to them.

All three judges gave the team nines - equalling the other team, and leaving former Disney star Sabrina Bryan and partner Louis Van Amstel a the top of the leader-board, while former Playboy Playmate Kelly Monaco and her partner Valentin remain most at risk at the bottom.

Still excited: The dancers couldn't contain their collective enthusiasm as they waited for the judges' verdicts

Dancing to their Guilty Pleasures, Sabrina and Louis got the top spot with a waltz to 'So This Is Love' from Cinderella, with Sabrina admitting: 'Ever since I was a little girl I've loved the idea of being a princess.'

But in rehearsals, she feared she would not be able to be 'vulnerable' with a 'calmness in your body' that Louis said she would need.

'Being like fast and fierce is so much easier - it's so much more natural for me,' she admitted.
Wearing a stunning Cinderella-style dress, her elegant performance captured the audience ending with her running away at the stroke of midnight from a giant onstage clock.

Throwing in the towel: Bruno Tonioli demanded Gilles' towel and managed to catch it

'Cinderella I think you're going to the ball - that was fabulous,' a clearly impressed Len told her, calling it 'such a charming number'.

After Bruno also gushed over the performance, comparing it to 'a magical ride into an enchanted kingdom', final judge Carrie Ann initially appeared to be ending their dream.

'I know you were going for vulnerability - and don't think you quite got to vulnerability,' she told them, initially to boos from the audience.

Flashing the flesh: The scantily-clad dancers were clearly enjoying themselves as they waited for their scores

Celebration: Gilles' team were thrilled with the three nines awarded by the judges fir the Gangnam style dance

'But I do think that was elegance personified and you didn't need vulnerability,' she quickly clarified.
'It was light, airy, gorgeous - and I think you are in for a happy ending.'

She then proved it - giving them a 10. Along with 9.5s from the other judges, they got the highest score of the night with 29, and a combined score of 58.5.

Sabrina could not hide her excitement after the performance. 'It was like a dream come true - and that is what Dancing With The Stars is about, they make dreams happen! It was amazing,' she gushed.

Graceful: Disney star Sabrina Bryan and partner Louis Van Amstel performed a Cinderella style number which won them plaudits from the judges

Pantomime of fun: No detail was left untouched with the couple even producing a glass slipper

Also seemingly struggling in auditions was Olympic gymnast Shawn Johnson and her partner Derek Hough as they prepared a rumba to the Titanic theme tune.

'I think if there's any dance that's going to show my weakness it's this dance, because it's just not my character. At all,' said Shawn, admitting to Derek that she was worried.

She felt the actors had an upper hand on such dances, saying they 'are paid to show emotion' whereas she complained that her 'entire career has been to not show emotion'.

Striking midnight: Dance professional Louis was surprised at the judges' glowing verdicts for the low key graceful dance

Hugging it out: The couple were overjoyed at the impressive set of scores they received from the judges

'I hide everything - I don't show emotion,' she explained further. 'When you are vulnerable you open yourself up to pain and fear and weakness… and that terrifies me.'

'I know that there's a vulnerable side to you,' Derek insisted. 'You just don't let other people see that.
'This is your opportunity to say, "For all those who think they know me - here I am. This is who I really am."'

Wearing a long white dress cut away at the back and sides and also with a split for her leg, the giant hug from Derek at the end appeared to prove that she had achieved what she feared was impossible.

Dramatic: Derek Hough and Shawn Johnson's rumba wowed the audience but attracted mixed reviews from the judges

Film favourite: The gymnast and her partner performed a Titanic inspired dance to Celine Dion's classic number

Bruno told her: 'That was awesome! I was with you every minute of it, emotionally connected like I've never seen you before. Touching and romantic - absolutely stunning.'

Meanwhile Carrie Ann told her: 'I feel like a proud mama right now just watching you. You have grown so much - you expressed incredible maturity and passion and vulnerability and it brought us all in.'

However, she then told them: 'I have to send you to your room - there was no lift,' referring to one part of her routine that she felt did not go to plan.

Life's a boat: Derek and Shawn's dance was a crowd favourite, much to their delight

To loud boos from the crowd, host Tom quipped: 'By the way, tonight Carrie Ann plays the iceberg.'

But while the two judges loved her permanence - with Bruno even giving her a perfect 10 - Len made it clear he was far from impressed.

'For me it was a Dickens' novel - I had great expectations, I got bleak house,' he complained, to the amazement of the audience and his fellow judges. 'For me it wasn't a rumba.'

One of the partnerships feeling the most pressure to perform were Apolo Anton Ohno and Karina Smirnoff after Karina's disastrous fall during their previous week's performance.

A dance to the glow of the moon: Derek and Shawn's number was performed to a striking backdrop

'It's how you get up, not how you fall down,' Karina said philosophically of the positive response they got.

But Apolo knew the heat would be on. 'We slipped up last week but we cannot let that hold us back - we have to push our level of moves way up,' he said. 'We can't hold anything back.'

Their routine started with them cavorting around a velvet-covered bed onstage - with Apolo wearing a wild leopard-print shirt as the danced a samba to Rick James's 'Give It To Me Baby'.

'It's one of those songs that when I hear it this is the short of shirt  feel I should be wearing,' he later said, pointing to his outrageous shirt.

Lady in red: Karina Smirnoff and Apolo Ohno danced an energetic Samba for their guilty pleasures number

Making the moves: Carrie Ann told Apolo he was 'not where he should be' after the dance

But if their reaction from the judges last week was positive despite the fall, this week they were in for a shock

Carrie Ann told them: 'Something's not quite right - you are such a bright shining star but I'm not feeling it. It's good - but it's not where Apolo should be. I think you guys need to work on the way you work together as a team. The chemistry feels a bit out of sync.'

Fortunately for the Olympic skater, her fellow judges did not agree.

'I feel like I'm in a home of the bewildered, I can't believe that,' Len said of his fellow judge's harsh comments. 'I thought that was terrific.'

Comeback week:  Apolo wanted to impress the judges after Karina's disastrous slip during last week's dance

'I thought you were terribly sexy,' Bruno added. 'Your timing was good, your rhythm was good - I think you did a great job.'

Despite her criticism, Carrie Ann still gave them a respectable 8.5, taking their score to 27 out of 30 and a combined score of 56.5.

Continuing her amazing recovery from her herniated disc after a nasty accident in rehearsals, Melissa Rycroft once again amazed everyone as she and partner Tony Dovolani did a tango to Toxic.

'Guilty Pleasure week - we didn't get to do this in season 8 so I'm really excited,' Melissa said. 'I mean who doesn't love some Britney Spears's Toxic, which is an awesome song.'

Mixed reviews: The three judges squabbled over several of the guilty pleasure dances this week

Tony agreed, saying: 'Oh awesome, that's a great song - that's actually a tango.'

Like some of the other competitors, the moves worried her. 'I've never done tango,' Melissa said as they started practice.

Her excitement soon wore off, with her admitting it 'is like a different language' - and then bursting into tears through her struggles to master her steps.

'This is the week that Tony and I really want to get to the top of the leader board and stay there, but I'm concerned that this routine is not going to be there,' she admitted.

Guilty pleasures: Tony Dovolani and Melissa Rycroft impressed with their tango to Britney Spears number Toxic

Scientific start: Tony and Melissa began the number with Melissa the subject of a scientific experiment

Starting off onstage as if they were in a mad scientist's lab, with Melissa wearing a dark red-headed wig in a bob and silver dress, their energetic moved won over the judges - especially given her injury.

'Melissa I'm going to give you a verbal pat on the back because I think you came out and performed that excellently,' Len told her. 'It was crisp, it was sharp. Occasionally I think you could have snapped a little more but I know you've had a problem…' he said as they referred to her injury.

His comments led to verbal sparring with host Tom Bergeron, with Len telling the host: 'You keep your witty comments to yourself.'

'That was more of a factual comment in an attempt to find your beating heart,' the sharp-witted host shot back to cheers from the audience.

Being judged: Tony and Melissa were given impressive scores from the three judges

Bruno Tonioli continued the praise, telling them: 'That wasn't toxic, it was intoxicating. Your character tonight came to life beautifully - you were sexy. As a performance we've seen a side of you I'd like to see more of.'

Carrie Ann - joining the other judges in given them a nine score - told her: 'You've always been the all American sweetheart and I always push you to get a little grittier - tonight you were absolutely gritty.

Their 27 out of 30 gave them a combined 56.5 points for the week.

Melissa admitted that the tango worried her because of the injury: 'This is probably the most difficult dance we could've gotten with this injury but he just told me, "Hold you're frame I'll get you there".

'I'm proud, we worked through it - we're not going home yet because of this,' she confidently stated.
