'I did the best I could': Bristol Palin puts on a brave face after being eliminated from Dancing with the Stars

She was commended by the judges for her vast improvement on Monday night's edition of Dancing with the Stars.

But it wasn't enough to save Bristol Palin who was eliminated from the show on Tuesday.

'Well, I did the best I could,' said the reality star after she and partner Mark Ballas were sent packing.

Disappointed: Bristol Palin was consoled by partner Mark Ballas after being voted off the all-star season of Dancing with the Stars on Tuesday

'I’m glad we managed to make it to week four. I had an awesome time,' added Palin who gave birth to her son, Tripp while she was an unmarried teenager.

'These are great people and I wish everyone the best of luck,” she added sportingly. 'It takes a lot of courage to sign up for this show.'

The Alaska native stayed dry-eyed, despite her tearful meltdown last week when she doubted her own dancing abilities and accused Ballas of 'being bummed' to have her as a partner.

Brave face: Bristol managed to muster a smile after learning she would not be returning to the show next week

Final battle: Mark and Bristol were up[ against Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Kirstie Alley in the fight against elimination

Final moments: Kirstie and Maksim looked nervous as they waited for the final viewers' results to come through

'I put my best foot forward in this competition,' she said resignedly, while her parents Sarah and Todd Palin watched from the audience.

The pair had been up against Kirstie and partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy in the final two with the Cheers actress and her partner receiving the lowest scores of Monday night for their Great Gatsby style Jitterbug.

But Kirstie and Maksim just squeezed through to the next round.

Show of support: Sarah and Todd Palin were proudly watching their daughter from the sidelines

'I was just glad to get 30,' said Alley, referring to the fact that 30 is usually the top score but a guest appearance from Paula Abdul bumped her points up.

'I don’t care if they had to bring in another judge to do it. I still got 30,' she laughed.

Olympic speed skater Apolo Anton Ohno, 30 and partner Karina Smirnoff also found themselves in jeopardy after receiving low marks when Smirnoff slipped dramatically during their hip hop inspired dance last night.

'It’s all my fault, I’m so sorry,' sobbed Smirnoff before they were saved from elimination.

Relief: Kirstie and Maksim were overjoyed at being put through to the next week

Moment of truth: Apolo Ohno and partner Karina Smirnoff almost lost out after Karina's accidental slip during yesterday's dance

Earlier, in a move that evoked the angst of the school sports field, the top scoring dancers - Gilles Marini and Shawn Johnson - were forced to pick teams for next week’s group freestyle performance.

'I really hope we don’t get picked last,' shuddered Palin, 21, just before the Sex and the City actor and Olympic gymnast cherry-picked their favourites from the ‘All Star’ group.

The two teams will battle it out in freestyle group dances to the South Korean rap Gangnam Style and Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen.

Cherry picking: Gilles Marini and Shawn Johnson had to choose dancing teams for next week's shows

Out in front: Gilles Marini and partner Peta Murgatroyd celebrated after being put through to next week

Celebration: High scorers  Shawn Johnson and partner Derek Hough were thrilled to be voted through to next week's show

Meanwhile, Kelly Monaco and Valentin Chmerkovskiy did little to discourage rumours of a possible romance between the pair.

The pair performed a very sexy routine on Monday night where Monaco, 36, wore nothing but a bra, knickers and a sheer white shirt - which was left undone, exposing her washboard abs.

'Words cannot describe how I felt out there… dancing with you Val,' gushed the General Hospital actress as she stroked his back and he kissed her hair after the performance.

'I want to dance with you forever,' she beamed as they shared a tender embrace.

Romantic rumours: There appeared to be some steamy chemistry between Val Chmerkovskiy and actress Kelly Monaco

Happy together: Kelly and Val were swiftly voted through to the next round after Monday night's steamy routine

Luckily the much-younger Chmerkovskiy appears to return the warmth and he took care to cosset Monaco, who was dancing with a broken toe.

After sweeping her off her feet on the dance floor and carrying her backstage he said: 'I really, really don’t care about the scores or the results or the elimination. I’m just really blessed to have met this person and be a part of her journey.'

Guest judge Paula Abdul voted them as her favourite couple on Monday and judge Carrie Ann Inaba said their dance was: 'the most emotional of the night.'

The couple stayed safe, in second place on the scoreboard, with 37.5 out of 40.

Good news: Melissa Rycroft and Tony Dovlani were happy after their jitterbug proved a hit with viewers

Surprised: Sabrina Bryan and partner Louis van Amstel glittered in gold as they were put through

Throughout the show, Dancing with the Stars alumni Carson Kressley marauded around backstage interviewing the contestants, helping with make-up and reviewing injuries.

'The highlight of my day was rubbing bronzer into Gilles’ chest area,' he said. 'It was a pretty good day at the office.'

To keep the audience entertained, international singing sensation Susan Boyle performed a duet with Season Nine’s champion Donny Osmond, 54.

Taking centre stage: A clearly nervous Susan Boyle performed This is My Moment on the show

Duet: Boyle is busy promoting her new album and took the place of Donny's sister Marie

Notoriously shy Boyle, 51, looked nervous and did not belt out the song This Is the Moment with her usual power.

Instead she looked awkward in a pretty beaded dress and Osmond hugged and held her hand through the number.

Despite her visible nerves the Scottish spinster gained a standing ovation from the crowd.

Centre of the floor: Kym Johnson and Tristan MacManus performed a stunning number to Boyle and Osmond's song
