ASir Jimmy Savile could be posthumously stripped of his knighthood in the wake of sickening child abuse allegations.

A Cabinet Office source confirmed the “unprecedented” move will be considered if the claims are found to have substance.

Savile was knighted in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list in 1990, in addition to an OBE he received in 1971 for services to charity and broadcasting.

Calls for his title to be revoked were posted on the Government’s official e-petitions website, although they were later removed because the site bans discussions about honours and appointments.

Hundreds more shocked fans vented their fury on Twitter and Facebook.

One wrote: “If you can posthumously take away a knighthood, Jimmy Savile should be number one on the list.”

The Cabinet Office source said: “To remove someone’s knighthood after their death is virtually unheard of, but it is possible.

“It would normally only be considered where an individual has been convicted of a criminal offence or officially censured by a professional body.”

The calls came as police in Surrey received a fresh allegation of rape against the former DJ and presenter who died in 2011 aged 84.

A spokesman said: “The alleged offence occurred in London, therefore the matter has been referred to the Metropolitan police.”

The new claim emerged after five women told an ITV documentary. Exposure: The Other Side of Jimmy Savile, which goes out tonight, that they were sexually abused by Savile in the 70s.

The BBC has denied covering up the allegations. The TV station is contacting all the police forces involved after setting up its own special investigation unit.

Last night another alleged victim came forward claiming her ordeal was to be featured in a Newsnight documentary – until it was axed by the Beeb.

Newsnight editor Peter Rippon denied any pressure had been put on him.

He said the story was dropped because it “had not established any institutional failure” on behalf of the police or Crown Prosecution Service.

Must admit used to be a big fan of Jim'l fix it, am having a huge about turn on the man.

There's a lot of girls/grown up women now coming forward with stories about him  coming out in the press, it's quite sickening now, to think he prayed on underage girls, while he himself was virtually 'untoachable' because of his charity work  and his connection (business and friendly ) with the royal family etc...
It's making me feel quite nauseous about him.

His brother Vince, I think his nams is/was, used to do a bit for the hospital radio where I did my training in the 1960's. He was a strange man.

I love Louis Theroux's wild weekend series, never saw this one tho (am a big fan of Louis)
odd now watching a clip of it, funny how you look at things in a different light, under new revelations (well new to me)

I was a big fan of Jim too. I loved his show Jim'll fix it.
Really sad to hear that he abused so many girls.
