Tears, talent and tantrums: X Factor 2012 gets off to an explosive start with doppelgangers and one arrested contestant

It is, as judge Louis Walsh helpfully pointed out, supposed to be the X Factor, not Stars In Their Eyes.

But that may not be entirely clear to viewers watching the auditions aired in the first episode of the new series tonight.

In London, Omar Rajpute, 29, strode on stage to perform Kiss, by Prince, in the singer’s trademark black eyeliner, announcing: ‘I think you know who I am today.'

Familiar faces: Omar Rajpute and Alexander McLeish kicked off the X Factor auditions as lookalikes to Prince and Rod Stewart

An unimpressed Gary said: 'It would be great for Prince week but what are you going to do for the other nine weeks?'

Glasgow had Alexander McLeish, 56, who looked the image of Rod Stewart with a shock of bright blonde hair and an all-white outfit – but opted to sing a Bee Gees hit.

He said: 'People always say I look like Rod Stewart, my answer is- Rod looks like me.'

Serious contender? Zoe Alexander arrived on stage as a tribute act to Pink but she struggled to impress the judges with her voice

Sing when your winning: Zoe first tried her hand at Pink's So What before being told to get her own identity

Still, his appearance was enough for Walsh to tell him: ‘The show is called the X Factor, it’s not Stars in Your Eyes!' (sic)

And then in Cardiff there was Pink, or rather Pink tribute act Zoe Alexander, 22, from Caerphilly, South Wales.

She said to Louis: 'I call myself Zoe Alexander, as Pink. But we want to get rid of the ‘as Pink’, and just want to be Zoe Alexander.'

Bad girl: Zoe was later arrested for hitting a producer after throwing a tantrum backstage following her poor audition

Striking star: Omar failed to impress with his audition even when he removed his shirt for the audience

Speaking earlier in the day she said: 'I have been doing the Pink tribute act for about two years now. It’s the best thing in the world when you love your job.

'Cause I get to perform, it makes me so happy and it makes other people happy and that makes me happy, I just want to please people.'

She added: 'Doing well today would be an absolute dream come true, it means everything to me, it’s what I do, I’m not really very good at anything else, it means a lot to me.'

The real deal: Tulisa jumped on stage to be compared to young pop star wannabe Ashley

Scary time: Curtis Golden was told he was irritating and boring by special guest judge Mel B

Zoe, whose mother and father are tribute acts to Shania Twain and Tom Jones, predictably performed So What by Pink.

Louis Walsh said: 'I want to give you a chance because you kind of blew it on that, can you be yourself?'

Eager to impress Zoe began singing Next To Me by Emeli Sande but was cut short by Nicole Scherzinger.

Spice up your life: Nando's worker Sheyi showered Tulisa with compliments but told Louis he looked like a plain guy

The former Pussycat Doll said: 'Hi Zoe! I really like your energy up there, I think you have a pretty good voice, I honestly think that you need to go away and find yourself as an artist, who you are.

With all the judges in agreement that she should ‘find herself’ as an artist rather than mimic her idol, she burst into tears and screamed at the panel, claiming they had told her to sing a Pink track.

'I didn’t want to sing a Pink song, I wanted to be me, you guys told me to sing a Pink song', she screamed as she stormed off.

Backstage, she continued to lash out – and ended up being arrested and cautioned for hitting a producer.

Emergency number: A group of firemen added some much needed eye candy for the ladies as the turned up partially in uniform

Elsewhere in the show Tulisa took to the stage to compare her face with a girl called Ashley who had more than a passing resemblance to her.

Nando's worker Sheyi hit a bum note when flirted with Tulisa but dissed Louis and said: 'I think you’re a kind of hot sort of person, you’re looking hot. Louis, you seem like a plain guy.'

Guitarist Curtis Golden saw the scary side of guest judge Mel B who branded him a bit annoying.

She said: 'I found it all a little bit irritating, the overdoing the comedic personality thing, I found that irritating.'

Ella Henderson, 16, completely wowed the judges with her voice being compared to Adele, as she sang a song she wrote herself, and the audience gave her a standing ovation.

A flabbergasted Louis said: 'It's hard to believe you're only 16-years-old.'

Surprise package: Ella Henderson impressed the judges and the audience with her own written song
