Another warm day and its the middle of autumn here now. It was 30°C today and will be the same tomorrow. Very unseasonal for this time of the year. A little cooler during the week.

It's cool and damp here. Fairly seasonal I guess...
but it would be lovely to have some sunshine.

The Vivid festival is a light festival that has projections on buildings around Sydney. Its on at the moment. Last night the BBC and Vivid celebrated Dr Who's 50th anniversary with 3D style light projections off a building near Circular Quay called Customs House. Here is a link to a YouTube video that shows the projections.
Dr Who 50th Anniversary at Vivid Other buildings and sites are lit up as well with different projections. The Opera House and the Contemporary Museum of Art to name a few. We saw the water lights at Darling Harbour when we went in to see War Horse. Edited by MargiABC - 02 June 2013 at 06:11 |

I found another YouTube video of Vivid showing the projections on the Sydney Opera House. My sister and her family went into to see it and they thought it was fantastic.

Looks like we're in for a scorcher of a summer here according to the weather forecasters. This last week of August (our winter) has been in the mid 20s C.

Its the second week of spring and the temperature has been 29°C for the last 2 days. So far we have had our warmest winter in a long time and it looks like we will have a pretty warm spring too. We usually expect it to be 29° around mid November. Due to the unususlly high spring temperatures, the authorities are already urging residents in bush fire risk areas to start preparimg their proprties.

I spoke too soon. It got up to 32C and there are currently 63 bushfires burning across NSW with 31 out of control. Gusty winds are making it worse. There have been 2 homes, some sheds and vehicles destroyed. My eyes have been watery all evening and that's from the winds blowing the smoke around.

If you want to meet a sailor in Sydney, this is the week to do so. Today marks the centenary of the first entry of the Royal Australian Navy into Sydney Harbour. Week long celebrations started yesterday with 15 tall ships from different countries sailed into Sydney Harbour. Since early this morning an armada of international warships have been sailing into the harbour for the International Fleet Review. Prince Harry will be arriving soon to take part in the official part that occurs tomorrow with our Governor General.
Russia and Canada were taking part but pulled out. Russia due to the Syrian crisis and the Canadian ship had a minor collision. Some of the warships from various countries taking part in the International Fleet Review have arrived throughout the morning include Great Britain, France, Spain, New Zealand, USA, China, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Brunei andia, Tonga and the Federation of Micronesia. Currently the GG is greeting the entry of 7 Australian warships into Sydney Harbour as a reenactment of the entry of the Royal Australian Navy in 1913. Edited by MargiABC - 04 Oct 2013 at 01:36 |

Well Deborah, what a weekend it will be - 1 D concerts (not my cup of tea), the International Fleet Review, and the NRL grand final tomorrow. Unfortunately my favourite team, South Sydney Rabbitos were beaten by Manly Sea eagles last week and missed out on the grand final by one game. Its been over 40 years since Souths won a grand final.
Prince Harry, the Gov Gen, the PM (Tony Abbott) and dignitries from countries taking part are on board the HMAS Leeuwin which is cruising around the harbour to review the warship. Good weather all weekend will make it great at 27°C. Edited by MargiABC - 05 Oct 2013 at 08:43 |

We went into the city and watched the International Fleet Review combined parade in George St. It was really great. Sailor uniforms are pretty universal in design, with variations with the French and Nigerian naval uniforms. I did like the uniforms of the Spanish naval officers. It was hot today, but glad it was today and not tomorrow as the weather forcast is for 39C.

I am worried about my friend who lives near the Blue Mountains. There are 7 major bush fires burning in NSW now. One near Lithgow where she works and one at Springwood, lower down the mountains. Basically the 2 major ways of getting out to Sydney from there will be cut off if conditions get worse. High temperatures and very gusty winds are making it worse. Water bombing aircraft have been grounded due to the high winds. Evacuations are taking place in all affected areas.

Over 30 homes have been burnt down in the mountains in one street. There are fears more will be lost as more fires take hold. This morning there were 7 major fires. The problem is that the high winds are causing the fire fronts to keep moving and blowing embers around which start more fires.

Over 80 homes have been lost now and quite a few more fires have occurred. . Very sad for those who have lost their homes. There has been one fatality and several fire fighters injured. Many of the firefighters are volunteers with the Rural Fire Service.
This morning we woke up to a thick blanket of smoke that drifted over Sydney from the mountains and fires in the Southern Highlands. |
