I turned down Eurovision - Donovan

Jason Donovan said it 'wasn't a tough decision' to turn down Eurovision

Jason Donovan said he "declined" the chance to represent the UK at the Eurovision Song Contest this year.

The Australian actor and singer told Heart FM he was approached after coming third in the Strictly Come Dancing final last year.

Donovan, who is co-presenting the breakfast show on the station all week, said: "Unofficially, I was asked this year to represent the UK at Eurovision.

"They actually came up to me and said would I be interested and I declined. Not because Eurovision is what it is, it's more about the fact that having just come off Strictly and feeling like I was under a bit of a microscope, I didn't really want to go through that experience again.

"Also, it's such a big audience and there's such an incredible pressure. You get one chance, it's like being an athlete, really. You have to start on the blocks and then go. But it wasn't a tough decision for me."

Veteran crooner Engelbert Humperdinck, whose last top 10 hit was 42 years ago, was chosen by the BBC as the UK entry for the contest.

The 75-year-old star, who famously held The Beatles off number one in 1967, follows boy band Blue who finished 11th last year, behind Ireland's Jedward.

Former Neighbours star Donovan, who had a series of top 10 hits including his duet with Kylie Minogue on Especially For You, has carved out a career in West End musicals.

He also took part in the station's Have a Heart Challenge which saw him take on Dancing On Ice's Chico Slimani in a space hopper race.

But he ended flat on his back after taking a tumble off his space hopper during the race, which was part of a series of events raising money for ChildLine.

I personally think they're takling the p*ss using Englebert.
He looks like a bloated 77 year old, (or however old he is)
Just proving UK don't care anymore imo.

You could resurect the 2 Beatles and put them back with Ringo and Paul and we would still fail, everyone hates us and it will be unlikely we would ever win again no matter how good the song/singer is.
