A tearful Heidi Range and Sébastien Foucan bow out of 'cruel' Dancing On Ice in emotional episode as injured Jennifer Ellison makes triumphant comeback

It could go down as the most emotional episode of Dancing On Ice to date as the stars broke down in floods of tears following a series of testing moments.

It was Sugababes singer Heidi Range and athlete Sébastien Foucan who ultimately left this year's series tonight after failing to impress during the 'Ultimate Skills' challenge.

And the programme wasn't without drama as both Heidi and Sebastian were placed in the bottom three, having to take part in a skate-off with professional skier Chemmy Alcott.

Upsets: A devastated Sébastien Foucan and Heidi Range lost out on a place in next week's show to Chemmy Allcott, who consoled the stars

It was down to head judge Robin Cousins to save just one contestant to go through to next week's show.

And when his decision was made, Sébastien broke down in tears as his disappointment was clear to see for everyone.

Taking the knock back badly, Heidi also started weeping as she started thanking her fans for her time in the programme.

And hosts Phillip Schofield and Christine Bleakley were left stunned as the emotional scenes played out.

Phillip commented as he watched Sébastien break down: 'What have we done? We said at the beggining it was going to be cruel but we had no idea it was going to be this cruel.'

It was a tricky week for the stars who were all being put to the test with an 'Ultimate Skills' challenge.

Tears: The athlete was kicking himself after losing his momentum in the skate off

Emotional: Host Phillip Schofield labelled the show 'cruel' as the celebrities were overcome with emotions

Skate Off: Chemmy, Sébastien and Heidi had to complete a full minute on the ice on their own in the final showdown

The celebrity skaters were all told they must complete several specific tests - including an unassisted jump in which both blades must leave the ice.

They were also told to carry out an identical step sequence, following the exact steps of their professional partners, as well as one spin.

Making a joke of it: Jennifer managed to see the funny side as she patted her injured head prior to taking to the ice

Struggles: After gashing her head open on last week's show the actress was scared to make a comeback in rehearsals

Applause: But she managed to wow the crowds with her fun routine after overcoming her confidence issues

To successfully receive points for their spin they had to turn around on just one foot and complete at least two rotations.

Former X Factor star Chico was the first star to take to the ice for this week's challenge and had a lot on his shoulders after his successful performance on last week's show.

Swapping skiis for skates: Chemmy Alcott has been using the show to help her rehabilitation following a ski accident

The singer danced a high energy routine with his partner Jodeyne Higgins to a track by Rizzle Kicks.

And he scored well with the three judges, garnering a total of 24 points overall.

Professional skier Chemmy Alcott was next up in front of the judges as she wore a dazzling gold jewelled costume for her dance.

All smiles: Chemmy was pleased with her overall score after successfully completing the three given tests in her routine

Struggles: Actor Andy Whyment found his sequence difficult in rehearsals but managed to pull it off when it mattered...

As she received a total of 22 points, Chemmy told host Philip Schofield how the show is continuing to help rehabilitate her following a nasty ski accident in which she hurt her leg.

The pretty blonde credited this week's jump challenge with helping her see herself back on snow, telling viewers: 'I want to see myself back on snow, I did a jump then and I didn't smash my leg up so that's a big improvement.

Looking dapper: The Coronation Street star hasn't ever found himself in a skate-off to date

Low on the leader board: But he was beaten by the other stars with the amount of points he received

Remaining stars: The celebrities are slowly whittling down as more leave the contest

She also revealed she imagined she was Katherine Jenkins to help her glide around the rink.

But it was third skater Jennifer which caused one of the biggest stirs following her nasty accident last Sunday, which saw her smash her head with her blade, causing her skull to gush with blood.

All week she has struggled to get back into practise as she builds her confidence back up, and in VT footage shown prior to her live performance, she was seen breaking down in tears.

After falling over on the ice, she held her hands over her eyes and told skating partner Dan Whiston: 'I'm, dead nervous, I don't know why, I'm shaking.

Problems: Athlete Sebastian Foucan was unhappy with this week's routine

But after describing her shell shock in an interview she vowed to give it her best shock and certainly impressed by completing her routine.

Dancing to Christina Aguilera's song Candy Man and dressed in a fetching sailor's outfit, she even held her head just before skating on to the ice to poke fun at the incident.

And after successfully carrying out the required challenges in the sequence, she faced the judges to receive a respectable score of 22.

But he gave it his best shot as he took to the ice with partner Brianne Delcourt...

Speaking after the routine, she thanked her fans for their support before saying into the microphone: 'Whoever stopped my husband from running on the ice to stop me, thank you. I had a lot of pressure, plus the injury. I just feel like I've done it so I'm made up.'

Head judge Robin Cousins commented that it was 'a little safe', but he congratulated her, adding: 'Nerves were kicking in, it was very hesitant tonight... It was hesitant but done with conviction.'

Coronation Street actor Andy Whyment and athlete Sebastian Foucan were the next two stars to give it their best.

Head banger: Jorgie showed she was fearless with a stunning Head Banger manoeuvre

Safety first: Jorgie didn't even show any fear as she threw herself into the routine during practise

Top female scorer: She was all smiles after completing yet another stunning sequence for the judges and viewers

One to beat: The Hollyoaks star is consistently topping the leader board with her immaculate routines

But Sébastien was left unhappy despite drawing in 22 points for his routine to Prodigy after struggling to take on the new requirements.

He complained following his dance: 'I'm not very happy with my routine but it's okay.. this routine is very fast and very hard.'

And it appeared it affected his nerves later on in the results show as he was forced to dance for a minute on his own.

But one star who was happy with her routine was stand-out skater Jorgie Porter, who performed the daring and dangerous head banger manoeuvre.

Ouch: TV presenter Sam Nixon faced a challenging week after attempting to do the 'Frog Lift' but hurting himself in rehearsals

He almost had to drop out of this week's competition altogether but was cleared by a physio...

... Despite having to take the Frog Lift out of his routine Sam carried out an impressive show

And her partner Matt Evers was stunned at her fearlessness over taking on the daring move.

Jorgie, who has stunned throughout the series, impressed the judges yet again, receiving 8.5s all round, totalling 25.5 out of a possible 30.

But she failed to receive the highest points this week - thanks to an impressive showdown with Emmerdale star Matthew Wolfenden.

The actor, dressed in a sequinned pink outfit, received a whopping 28 marks overall after carrying out the perfect steps.

Top scorer: Matthew was the man of the night as he stunned with his near perfect routine

Glowing: The actor gave a huge hug to his partner Nina Ulanova showing his happiness at the performance

Securing his safety: Receiving the highest score of the series so far Matthew was ecstatic

Other stars who took to the ice tonight included TV presenter Sam Nixon, who almost had to drop out earlier in the week after injuring himself practising one particular move.

He was hoping to wow the crowds with the special Frog Lift but after hurting himself, medics were called in an he only had a few days to prepare for the show once he got the all clear from his physio.

And despite having to take the Frog Lift out of his routine, Sam's adamant he'll do it another week if he's kept in the competition - and he now has that opportunity.

Lady in red: The Sugababes star performed to her band's song Push The Button

Bowing out gracefully: Heidi was pleased with her performance, admitting she's come along way since she began the programme

Final scores: How the stars performed on Sunday's showdown

Sugababes singer Heidi Range received the lowest scores although still stunned in red hot pants while dancing to her own single Push the Button.

Last week she took a tumble but put it behind her to carry out a daring lift which saw her be spun around on her partner's shoulders.

Heidi battled with nausea but was all smiles as she wrapped up her performance.

She told the judges after her routine: 'I'm relieved it's over and I didn't go flying into the audience.'

But she failed to impress the judges in the results show as she had to spend 60 seconds on the ice without her partner.

Although she didn't take any tumbles it was Chemmy who was saved thanks to her ability on the ice and Sébastien's failure to carry out his routine.

The perfectionist star lost his way midway through his routine and failed to complete the skate off.

But he was consoled by both Chemmy, who was also in tears, and his skating partner Brianne as they took to the ice for their lap of honour.
