Charlene admits that her exit was a relief - as she was close to needing surgery on her shoulder. And this doesn't even sound like an excuse...

Former Dallas star Charlene Tilton has said that her Dancing on Ice exit came just in time to prevent her needing shoulder surgery.

Judges' votes combined with the opinions of the public placed her in the bottom two again in the ITV1 show on Sunday.

Judges Robin Cousins, Katarina Witt and Louie Spence all decided to save children's TV presenter Sam Nixon and his partner Alexandra Schauman rather than Tilton and Matthew Gonzalez.

The actress, 53, said: “The timing is perfect. I don’t think it would have lasted another week. I can’t even carry my purse or open a door, it hurts so much. It needs a chance to heal without surgery. At the end of the day, staying in another week, is it worth going on an operating table for?”

Charlene said the pain had become so bad that she wanted to quit.

“I wanted to stop every day,” she admitted. But she also claimed to have loved her time on the hit ITV1 show. She said: “It’s been such a blessing for me, mentally, physically. I’ve met the most wonderful people.”

Highest score from the judges on a pop-themed evening went to Hollyoaks star Jorgie Porter, with her partner Matt Evers, who were awarded 24 points out of a possible 30 for their dance to Britney Spears' Baby One More Time.

Porter dressed Spears-style as a schoolgirl and said afterwards: "I was whooping as I was doing it."

Cousins told her: "You encapsulated the role throughout the whole routine" and Spence said: "You gave it elegance, you gave it grace, but you also gave it finesse there."

Next best judges' score was 23, to Emmerdale actor Matthew Wolfenden and his partner Nina Ulanova. Wolfenden shook off troubles with a painful back to impress with his dancing to The Look of Love by ABC.

Spence, referring to the lyrics of the song, said: "It doesn't take a lot to love you, Matt."

Cousins told him: "You did more than anyone else is going to do tonight, technically."

Skier Chemmy Alcott had royal support - friends Zara Phillips, grand-daughter of the Queen, and her rugby star husband Mike Tindall were in the audience.

Ms Phillips added: "I'm really proud of Chemmy tonight - awesome, fast, had everything in it which she wanted to get in."
