Hollyoaks star Jorgie Porter happy to take it a week at a time during Dancing on Ice adventure

Feb 5 2012 by Steve Hendry, Sunday Mail

Jorgie Porter has become one of the hot favourites to win Dancing on Ice – and nobody is more surprised than her.

The Hollyoaks star has dared, and almost bared, her way into the reckoning with a series of breathtaking costumes and fearless dance routines performed with her partner Matt Evers.

She’s a favourite of judges Louie Spence, Katarina Witt and Robin Cousins and, so far, the viewers love her. For the 24-year-old blonde, it’s all come as a bit of a shock.

She said: “You should have seen me on the first day on the ice. My arms were flying everywhere and my legs weren’t far behind. I was like Bambi flying into the barriers.

“I’ve really surprised myself. I went ice-skating when I was eight a couple of times and all I can remember is going really fast.

“The training boots are horrendous, you are flying about, your legs are splitting and going in different directions.

“I honestly never ever thought I would be able to skate like this, never mind backwards. I can’t believe where I am now.”

Jorgie, who plays Theresa McQueen in the Channel 4 soap, has got there with the help of Matt, 35, and bone-sapping hard work.

Filming Hollyoaks at the same time, she rises in the dark at 6amand gets to bed late at night whenever she gets home from training.

It’s a punishing schedule but, four weeks in, she’s thriving on it.

She said: “I think my body is running on adrenaline all the time.

“It’s like it has turned over and gone into overdrive. It doesn’t feel tired, it feels extremely awake all the time, which is just as well.

“I thought they might leave me out of the show (Hollyoaks) a little bit just now but they haven’t.

“In fact, I am getting more physical than ever and I am saying to them ‘why do we have to do this now?’ When it comes to an end, I am going to crashand burn.”

The star’s hard work has been tough on her relationships – she is currently dating James Atherton, 21, who stars in Hollyoaks as Theresa’s lover Will Savage.

Jorgie comes from a very tight-knit family. Having grown up in Salford with her mum and grandmother, she is extremely close to both.

Everyone has had to take a back seat as she spends hours on the ice but she is grateful for their backing.

She said: “James is so supportive. He comes every single weekend even if he has work early on the Monday morning.

“He will happily get up and leave at 5am, get the train and go straight into work. He is fully behind me.

“My mum comes down every weekend too. It’s really fantastic and it means a lot.

“I am sort of missing my grandma a little bit, though. She is still at home and can’t get out of the house much.

“When, or rather if , I have a day off – I have not hadone for months – I will be going straight home tosee her.”

She has, of course, been able to see Jorgie performing on TV– quite a lot of her, in fact, if the truth be told.

A series of skimpy costumes have marked her out from the crowd, not least last week when she donned a PVC, leather and Lycra ensemble of bra-top and leggings for a head-to-head dance with Emmerdale heart-throb Matthew Wolfenden and Nina Ulanova.

Jorgie is comfortable in her own skin, having posed for lads mags and just recently posing in figure-hugging leather to launch a ‘biking beauties’ competition for a motorbike insurance brand.

As far as she’s concerned, however, it’s just playing dress-up.

She said: “I am never precious about what I look like. I have found it so much fun to dress up in the outfits and all the hair and make-up.

“I said to everyone at the very beginning, ‘do whatever you want, I’m cool’. Then they brought out the bra and I thought Oh. My. God.”

Bright and breezy, Jorgie can laugh off the attention it has brought her and seems genuinely perplexed about why, suddenly, everyone wants to speak to her.

She said: “I can’t quite believe it. I am wondering if people are getting sick of me. I’m bored of talking about me.

“Every other day I’m told I am talking to a dozen journalists today and I keep thinking, ‘are you sure?’”

Despite being only three weeks into the competition, Jorgie has showed off advanced skills.

Last week partner Matt lifted her above his head for a spin without the actress even holding on.

And although she trained as a ballet dancer as a child, the discipline is completely different from dancing on the ice, and she credits Matt for helping her adapt and get through it.

She said: “Matt and I are training every single dayfor three hours so we havereally bonded.

“He’s a funny guy, which makes it easy too. It’s hard to explain what happens but something just clicks and you get it.

“Matt will keep telling me, ‘bend your knees, bend your knees, bend your knees’ and then you find yourself just doing it, almost blindfolded.

“It’s just like a light bulb going on. You stop thinking about it and it just happens.”

After three years in Hollyoaks, Jorgie hasn’t had her head turned by Dancing on Ice, but she doesn’t rule out taking advantage of any offers that may come from her appearance on it.

She said: “I started off wanting to be a dancer then I was lucky enough to get a break as an actor so you just never know what’s going to happen.

“I’m happy at Hollyoaks and I am glad to stay there but if something comes up, then who knows.”

So that’s all for another time – as is thinking about reaching the final.

At the moment, Jorgie is simply focused on getting past tonight’s show.

She said: “I don’t think about the final. I just take every week as it comes.

“You never know when you are out, when the public will vote for you, if they have remembered you, or even if they want to keep you.

“I’d like to stay. I just want to get better and keep on skating.”
