I'm A Celebrity 2011: Freddie Starr axed after show bosses feared he might die live on TV

by Nicola Methven, Daily Mirror 16/11/2011

Freddie Starr will not return to the 'I'm A Celebrity' jungle

FREDDIE Starr has been axed from I’m a Celebrity after producers feared he might die – live on TV.

Mystery still surrounds the reason for the 68-year-old comedian’s dramatic collapse on Monday. One senior source said they could not risk him keeling over again and banned him from going back.

The insider said: “Freddie is clearly not well and life in the jungle is tough.

“The last thing we want is for him to get really ill or, heaven forbid, die live on television. It felt irresponsible to allow him back in the jungle.”

Last night, an ITV spokesman confirmed: “Producers of I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! have decided that Freddie Starr won’t return to live in the jungle. Freddie has been a terrific contestant. His Bushtucker Trial is one of the stand-out moments in the show’s history and we wish him all the best.”

Freddie said he was “sick" at the decision. He will also only receive a portion of his fee, after failing to appear in the show until next week’s eliminations.

He collapsed after beating TOWIE playboy Mark Wright in a Bushtucker Trial which involved eating a fermented egg, pig’s anus and camel’s toe.

Overweight Freddie – who still smokes despite suffering a heart attack last year and needing a quadruple bypass – felt sick and faint after the Trial and was taken away by ambulance. Doctors diagnosed an allergic reaction but have been unable to determine exactly what caused it.

One show source said: “Freddie suffered a severe allergic reaction. Doctors are unable to pinpoint what triggered it, but have looked at all eventualities – tics, leeches, snake and spider bites, a scrape of bark or twig, or something he ate.

“The advice is that, as the doctors do not know what triggered his illness, he shouldn’t return to camp.”

Freddie was kept overnight in the Cardiac Care unit at Tweed Heads Hospital in New South Wales. As he left hospital yesterday, looking frail, he smiled and said: “I’m feeling good, thanks.” But later he said he was gutted.

Producers have declared Freddie's 'Greasy Spoon' trial one of "the stand-out moments in the history of the series"

Freddie, who is planning a stand-up tour next year, said: “I’ll miss everyone in the jungle and whoever wins the competition, I wish them all the luck in the world. I’d love Fatima Whitbread to win.

“I was sorry to hear what the doctors said, that I was allergic to something, to play it safe and it’s best for me not to go back in. It may not happen again, but we’ll never know... I was sick not to finish the show, but there’s no use crying over spilt milk. The decision has been made and I have to live with that.”

Just last week while on his way to Australia, Freddie had joked: “Doctors said to me, ‘If you go in there, you’ll die’.” He is expected to fly back to the UK to be with his girlfriend Sophie, 34.

Meanwhile, two new faces are in the jungle – 80s pop star Sinitta and DJ Pat Sharp.

Sinitta, 43, aims to conquer her fear of creepy crawlies to make her kids Magdalena, six, and Zac, five, proud of her. And Pat, 50, is adamant this is not a desperate attempt to reboot his career.

He said: “I’m not someone who wants to grab the attention and turn into a kind of Jonathan Ross... But if someone says, ‘Wow, you came across well and we’d like to give you a TV show’, I’d be a fool to turn it down.”
