X Factor finals 2011: Fury as TV bosses admit to altering Kitty Brucknell's voice

X FACTOR was plunged into a new storm last night after TV bosses admitted digitally altering a contestant’s voice.

Viewers were up in arms over wannabe Kitty Brucknell’s “robotic-sounding” vocals on Saturday’s show.

ITV1 chiefs denied using voice-perfecting Auto-Tune – but confessed her voice WAS manipulated for the first 20 seconds of her performance.

One angry fan tweeted: “Surely that’s cheating.”

THERE was something strange about Kitty Brucknell’s X Factor performance on Saturday night from the moment she opened her mouth.

No one could have produced the unearthly “robotic” sound that came out as she began her powerful rendition of Sweet Dreams.

And angry viewers immediately began texting and tweeting that they felt they were being conned.

They suspected the use of voice-enhancing Auto-Tune in a repeat of last year’s scandal which saw bosses admit doctoring performances during the audition stage.

ITV1 bosses insisted it wasn’t used this time around – but incredibly they have confessed that Kitty’s voice WAS manipulated for the first 20 seconds of the track.

The latest crisis came as the under-fire show was beaten in the ratings for the first time in four years by the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing.

Alexandra Burke’s stuttering performance filling in for sick judge Kelly Rowland saw an average of 9.9 million tune in – compared with 10.2 million for Strictly.

In a further blow, rumours persist that Kelly could turn her back on X Factor after just one series after growing tired of the backstage bust-ups and poisonous atmosphere.

But it was the astonishing admission that producers sanctioned computer wizardry to alter Kitty’s voice which has caused the biggest uproar.

The Mirror revealed last year that Auto-Tune was being used to make some contestants sound better.

The voices of wannabes Gamu Nhengu, 18, and Shirlena Johnson, 30, clearly sounded synthesized – and bosses were forced to admit they DID use the technology.

At the time, a “furious” Simon Cowell and executive producer Richard Holloway banned its use ever again – and insisted it would never happen in the live final stage.

Holloway promised: “Anything that would affect the public vote, we wouldn’t do.”

But fans suspected the technique was being used this year too – and complained in droves.

Atem Eyong said: “Why was Kitty allowed to use Autotune? Cheating.” Andrew Yee said: “Surely AutoTune should be banned on X Factor? Sounded like Kitty was using it.”

Leanne White said: “Turn off that autotune! If there’s anyone on there who doesn’t need it it’s Kitty.” Another outraged viewer asked: “Why has Kitty got auto tune? Surely that’s cheating? ”

Last night a spokesman for the show said: “The X Factor does not use Auto-Tuning. Kitty’s track had a retro electronic style, so a robotic effect was used so that the vocals were in keeping with the track. This did not alter the pitch or tone of the vocals in any way. If Kitty had hit a wrong note viewers would have heard it.”

A source added: “This is nothing like Auto-Tuning and we do not use any effects which would materially change or mislead viewers as to the pitch or tone of the original vocal.

“It was a robotic-echo effect in line with the track.”

But an insider claimed last night that bosses had been “unbelievably stupid” in altering Kitty’s vocal. The source said: “Given the furore over the Auto-Tune scandal, the fact that someone gave the green light to alter the vocal in any way whatsoever – regardless if it was to make it better or not – is unbelievably stupid and naive to say the least.

“Millions of viewers are turning off the show and this trickery smacks of a way to make people sit up and take notice again – but it’s backfired horribly.”

The show has repeatedly been at the centre of speculation about contestants’ performances being enhanced.

Jedward were hit by claims two years ago that soundmen had been ordered to mask their weak vocals by turning up the backing volume.

But it was last year’s Auto-Tune scandal that really sparked the most anger. Cowell even flew into the UK and ordered an immediate ban on the gizmo for future shows.

The insider said: “The fact that Cowell is away in the US and this sort of thing happens won’t please him at all.”

It is just the latest in a series of controversies that have dogged the show.

Bosses were forced to pay back £900,000 following a phone line scandal when votes for three episodes of the talent show were received too late to count towards results.

One show was the December 2005 final, won by Shayne Ward. Last night executives were also forced to contend with a dramatic slump in ratings.

Despite hitting a peak of 11.3million tuning in, Strictly even topped that, with a high of 11.5million.

But X Factor chiefs were putting on a brave face last night with one saying: “We are not unduly worried. We have continued to be the most successful show on TV this autumn.”

He added: “Fair play to Strictly. We’ve got two great shows achieving great ratings. But we’re not resting on our laurels and will be back to beat them another day – maybe next week.”

Last night two of Kelly Rowland’s acts – Misha B and Sophie Habibis - found themselves in the sing-off.

Sophie was voted off unanimously by the judges – including Kelly who phoned in live from her sickbed in LA.

The Destiny’s Child star is said to be feeling much better following a throat infection, and hopes to be back on the panel next Saturday.

Friends say she was shocked when she heard judge Louis Walsh hinting there could be other reasons for her absence, apart from her illness.

A source said: “She will put him back in his place next weekend.”

But as X Factor’s ratings continue to fall, a BBC spokesman said: “We’re delighted more and more are tuning in to Strictly Come Dancing.”

And Mirror columnist Robbie Savage tweeted: “Can’t believe I’m dancing on the most viewed show in Britain with 11.5 million viewers – wow!”

'Fury'? Really? Nah, I doubt it. 'Raised eyebrows' doesn't really make for a good headline though, does it?
