Chris Kamara's TV skating dream is put on ice

FOOTBALL pundit Chris Kamara's dreams of donning spandex and starring in Dancing on Ice have melted away - for this year at least.

The Middlesbrough-born Sky Sports presenter was ready to embrace the sparkles and sequins after being approached by TV bosses to be a contestant in the next series.

But despite being incredibly tempted by the offer, the former midfielder, who played for Boro on loan in 1993, had to turn it down due to his already hectic schedule.

Training for January’s show would start almost immediately and would take in weekends - when Chris’s time is already committed to featuring on Soccer Saturday and Goals on Sunday.

He also writes a column for a magazine and a national newspaper.

Chris told the Gazette: “I was up for doing it. I have watched the programme and I quite like it.

“I could see myself doing the Bolero. I would have loved to have done it.

“To be fair to them, they were trying to do their best to make it easier for me, saying you could do a couple of hours here or there, but it’s the type of thing that requires commitment and - as much as I like having a laugh - I don’t want to make too much of a fool of myself and half do it.”

Kamara admitted the thought of injury did cross his mind while he was in deliberations.

“I love playing football. I thought ‘what if I damage one of my ankles? That would be the end of it’,” he said.

But co-presenters from Sky Sports were egging him on.

“Sky were pretty relaxed about it.

“They left it up to me.

“Jeff Stelling was saying ‘go for it’ with all the boys so they could have a laugh.

“I spoke to them last Friday and that’s what made me think I will do it, but I realised it was impossible,” he said.

However, the former Brentford, Luton Town and Leeds United player, who also managed Stoke City and Bradford City, has not given up on skating stardom forever.

He said: “Maybe the workload will get shorter for next year and I will have another go at it then, but at the moment I’m snowed under.”
