It was a real ‘SuBo’ moment. Everyone thought the guy had auditioned for a laugh.

MOVE over Rik Waller and Michelle McManus.

A singer who once tipped the scales at 36stone is set to make it big on this year’s series of The X Factor.

The wannabe called Basil auditioned for the TV judges in Manchester. When he walked on stage, the audience sniggered because of his size.

The 35-year-old hopeful told the panel it was his dream to sing.

But after a series of knock-backs and rejections from record companies, he had turned to food for comfort and ballooned in size.

He confessed he knew his size could be a problem so he went on a diet before trying out for The X Factor and shed seven stone so he now weighs 29st.

And Basil had the last laugh. He blew the panel away with his voice.

Judge Tulisa Contostavlos, 23, was almost in tears. Last night a source on the show said: “It was a real ‘SuBo’ moment. Everyone thought the guy had auditioned for a laugh.

“When he came on stage, people laughed because of his size. But they soon stopped when he started singing.”

Basil was put through to boot camp this week and is now waiting to find out if he has made the Judges’ Houses stage of the competition.

He is one of the big stars who will be featured on the new series of The X Factor, which returns on ITV1 tomorrow at 8pm.

Being fat has not stopped some wannabes becoming stars.

Simon Cowell’s former talent show Pop Idol unearthed two large singers.

In 2001, Rik, 30, who weighed 30st, made the final 10 but pulled out because of laryngitis.

And Michelle McManus, 31, who was 22st, ended up winning the competition in 2003.
