Stop the presses: Engineer Glenn Ward is fired from The Apprentice after failing magazine task

By Daily Mail Reporter

Design engineer Glenn Ward was the latest contestant to be fired from The Apprentice after his team failed a magazine task.

The 28-year-old was cited as the weakest link by Sir Alan Sugar after he was called into the boardroom with project leader Jim Eastwood and teammate Susan Ma.

Although he had plenty of criticism for Ventrum team leader Jim, Lord Sugar decided to drop Glenn because he was unconvinced he had a head for business.

Heading home: Sir Alan wasn't convinced an engineer belonged in the business world

Lord Sugar said: 'I've had problems the past few weeks grasping what your USP is...

'I've never come across an engineer who can turn his hands to business. You're fired.'

In Week Seven of this year's series, Team Ventrum and Team Logic were challenged to create a 'freemium' - free magazine - and raise the highest amount of advertising revenue.

Team Logic, headed by Natasha Scribbins, decided to launch a lads' mag, while Ventrum opted for an over-60s publication.

Ventrum's main stumbling block appeared to be the name 'Hip Replacement' - which was meant to be a play on words as in hip meaning cool or youthful - suggested by Zoe Beresford.

However, prospective advertising buyers were all put off the name, as was Lord Sugar, who at 64 is in their target market.

Different markets: Team Logic's magazine Covered received £76,500 worth of advertising compared to Ventrum's publication Hip Replacement's £28,500

In the boardroom, he said: 'The title 'Hip Replacement' has backfired. I'm reading it exactly as what it means.'

When Ventrum tried to explain their slogan 'in with the new, out with the old', Lord Sugar fired back: 'Out with an old hip, in with a new hip... Sounds like a do-it-yourself hip replacement.'

Glenn and Susan were left in charge of the photoshoot for the front cover, which was eventually chosen as a sixtysomething couple hugging.

When Jim called Susan and Glenn into the boardroom, he criticised them for not coming up with better photos.

Coming in for the most criticism was Susan, 21, who was told by Jim she didn't contribute enough ideas or make her voice heard when questioning some of the decisions made.

Despite winning the task by securing £76,500 worth of advertising compared to Ventrum's £28,500, Natasha and Team Logic were told their lads magazine was too dated.

Isn't that a bit tacky? Helen and Tom weren't impressed with Natasha's decision to launch a lads' magazine

Although they initially set off to do something more classy than typical lads' mags after a focus group with the target audience, Natasha appeared happy to bring it more downmarket - to the chagrin of teammates Tom Pellereau and Helen Milligan.

It was targeted at rich career men who liked to play as hard as they worked and was titled 'Covered'.

One feature that raised eyebrows was 'How do you blow your load', which asked young men how they like to spend their money.

It's a tough job, but someone's got to do it: Tom was hands on as the model borrowed his glasses for the cover shoot

During their pitches to the advertising firms, the sales executives complained the magazine was outdated and looked too Nineties.

One sales expert told the team their tacky front cover with a half-naked model wearing glasses and a suit jacket had 'alienated most of their client base'.

Natasha found herself unable to take a back seat during the task and butted in during Leon Doyle's pitch, who later complained to her 'I would like to do the whole pitch without being interrupted.'

No room for negotiation: Jim was criticised by Nick for failing to negotiate with the first advertising buyers

Back in the boardroom, all four members of Ventrum argued over who was responsible, with team leader Jim unwilling to take the blame.

Zoe claimed she had been 'away' during the cover design, which was contradicted by Jim.

Glenn told Jim: 'You're a bit of a control freak, you never let anyone finish a sentence.'

Everything's nice now: Despite attacking each other in the boardroom, Glenn hugged Susan and Jim goodbye

Discussing who to fire, Lord Sugar admitted both Susan and Jim had their failings too.

He said: 'Jim uses a manipulative manner to get everyone on side.'

Karren Brady told Jim she found him 'passive aggressive'.

Despite being impressed by Susan starting her own business at such a young age, he warned her: 'Your age isn't an excuse. If you wanna play in a big person's world, you gotta be a big person.'

On reflection, Glenn said: 'I was surprised to be fired. I didn't want to be fired and I didn't expect to be.

Love interest: Zoe - who has been romantically linked to Glenn - was shocked by his firing

'We didn't want a cliched title. We might have got a little bit carried away. It could have really worked, as the concept was right, but it was a mistake we lost the task.

'I would have liked to show Lord Sugar that an engineer can do business. There are engineers who do do business quite well like James Dyson, Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg. I wouldn't quite compare myself to them, but I aspire to be like them.'

However, Glenn declined to be drawn on his apparent romantic relationship with felllow contestant Zoe.

He said: 'I will not go into detail now. Zoe's a very good girl, and a strong person. We are good friends and I will stay friends with her.'
