SIMON Cowell has blamed Cheryl Cole over her shock sacking from X Factor USA.

The music mogul claims the devastated pop star did not work hard enough to try to impress her new American bosses.

And he cruelly told one associate: “She doesn’t travel well. We’ve made a terrible mistake.”

Cowell, 51, reckons 27-year-old Cheryl didn’t push herself enough and allowed co-judges Paula Abdul and LA Reid to dominate discussions during auditions.

As the show began to unravel plain-speaking Cowell was forced to admit things weren’t working out and Cheryl was looking like a “spare part” on the panel.

He had promised Fox TV a feisty, no-nonsense judge. But insiders claim she seemed to show a lack of confidence.

She also raised eyebrows by spending her spare time with music business pals rather than buttering up TV chiefs.

Cowell told a friend: “I feel for Cheryl, but the Americans just didn’t get her.”

One source claimed he was forced to wield the axe to protect the future of the series, which begins in the US this autumn.

The insider added: “Cheryl didn’t play the game out there by sucking up to the TV bosses and going to parties. Basically she just didn’t deliver.”

Tensions arose from the first audition in Los Angeles on May 8. Cowell repeatedly told Cheryl she needed to contribute more, but she found it hard to get going.

There were also concerns that her Geordie accent made it difficult for American audiences to understand her.

After the Chicago auditions on May 19, Cowell had to concede that pint-sized Fox Entertainment boss Mike Darnell, who had resisted Cheryl from the start, was right and she had to go.

The US source added: “Simon stuck his neck out for Cheryl and really wanted it to work. But she just didn’t fit into the mix.”

Now the show’s co-host Nicole Scherzinger is set to take over on the judging panel.

A friend of Cheryl hit back last night, saying: “Simon’s doing his usual trick of blaming everyone but himself. Cheryl was thrown in at the deep end and he gave her no help or leeway.

“It is very unfair that she wasn’t allowed time to settle in. Simon can’t just simply wash his hands and say it was all Cheryl’s fault. That is a gross distortion of what really happened.”
