Cheryl Cole's fury with Simon Cowell at US X Factor sacking

SHE arrived to a fanfare of praise from her new bosses who insisted her electric personality would thrill US audiences.

But last night, Cheryl Cole’s American dream lay in tatters after the very same people branded her an X Factor flop with a lack of chemistry and an accent no one understood.

And the furious 27-year-old Geordie laid the blame for her humiliation squarely at the feet of Simon Cowell who she accused of stitching her up by caving in to fickle TV bosses after promising he would make her a huge hit.

Cheryl said: “I’ve been hung out to dry, and I know who’s to blame. I’ve had no opportunity whatsoever to prove myself and instead they’ve just cast me aside like a fool.”

The Girls Aloud star was sacked from the American X Factor panel after just two shows. Cowell tried to soften the embarrassing blow by offering her a job back on the UK version. He insisted the decision to fire her was so she could “rescue” the Brit classic. But friends claim Cheryl is so livid with him that she is considering snubbing his offer.

One said: “Cheryl’s not stupid. She knows this is a kick in the teeth no matter what spin Cowell comes up with. She’s so upset she’s not even sure she wants to do the UK version. Little wonder after the way she’s been treated.”

Fox TV executives are thought to have told Cheryl she was fired last week.

The axing marks the climax of a bitter power struggle between Cowell and station chief Mike Darnell over her suitability as a judge. The American was sceptical about using Cheryl as he did not think she was well enough known in the US. He also branded her timid and had fears over her accent after some singers could not understand her.

He gave Cheryl the benefit of the doubt after Cowell’s glowing praise. But Darnell, 49 – dubbed “the world’s scariest programmer” – now claims he saw little of the “charm and chemistry” he was promised.

An insider said: “In the end Darnell put his foot down and said enough was enough after watching the LA auditions.

“Cowell is an influential man and pushed Cheryl as much as he could but in the end Darnell’s influence proved too powerful.”

Fox have yet to publicly comment. But a source said: “We’re not thrilled with the chemistry. Cheryl may be Britain’s sweetheart, but at the end of the day, she wasn’t a big enough name here.”

The axing has also shattered Cowell’s credibility in the US after he tried to convince bosses she would be a major hit. A TV source said: “His indecision is final at the moment and he is making bad calls far too regularly.

“If the new X Factor was a football match, fans would be singing, ‘you don’t know what you are doing’.

“The pressure is on now to turn things around, try to make the US show a hit and keep Cheryl happy.”

Cheryl’s camp hit back at claims she was no good at her job.

One source said: “Any suggestion she wasn’t totally up for it is nonsense. She was desperate to make a success of it in the US and thought she was doing a brilliant job.

“Fox knew all about her accent and it wasn’t an issue. But it’s Cowell she’s most upset with. He promised her the world and insisted Fox would love her. She put all her trust in Simon’s hands. Yet she’s been humiliated in the most public fashion imaginable. It’s not fair.”

Cheryl has been in hiding since arriving home in Britain on Sunday. Pals revealed she is worried about returning to the limelight.

One said: “To have to step out after being so publicly humiliated will be a bitter pill to swallow.”

The singer’s family spoke of their shock at the sacking. One relative said: “We are stunned. If it has happened because of her accent, then that is really stupid.

“But she is a strong girl and I am sure she will bounce back.”

Cheryl’s humiliation is a far cry from when she signed up for the US show alongside fellow judges LA Reid, 54, and Paula Abdul, 48.

Fox said: “Cheryl Cole has the whole The X Factor package: She’s an incredibly talented artist and performer, as well as a style icon.” Cowell added: “They wanted her all the time.” Lewis Hamilton’s girlfriend Nicole Scherzinger, 32, is to take Cheryl’s place.
