  • Kirstie Alley and partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy take second place
  • Chelsea Kane and Mark Ballas come in a surprising third

As a tall, heavyset American football player, he certainly wasn't one of the favourites to win Dancing With The Stars at the beginning of this season.

But Hines Ward showed just how far he'd come tonight when he walked away with the coveted Mirror Ball trophy.

The overjoyed footballer thanked the fans who voted for him as he and partner Kym Johnson celebrated the 12th season win.

Overjoyed: Hines Ward and his partner Kym Johnson celebrate with the Mirror Ball trophy after tonight's grand finale of Dancing With The Stars

Applause: American football star Hines held the trophy aloft to the cheering audience, proving a popular winner

'You know, starting this competition, I never thought I'd be in the finals,' the NFL star told host Tom Bergeron.

'But I owe it all to Kim. She's an amazing teacher, and I want to thank the judges for giving us the constructive criticism to help me get better each week. Also, I want to thank all the fans.'

Hines started the two part finale as the favourite to scoop the trophy, and didn't disappoint in his last performance, as he and Kym danced a perfect samba to Earth, Wind and Fire song Fantasy.

Fans of his American Football team Pittsburgh Steelers waved black and gold towels in the audience as he and Kym beat rivals Kirstie Alley and Maksim Chmerkovskiy into second place.

Kym reacted with shock and joy as they were announced as the winners, before Hines ran over to give his watching mother a kiss.

'Hines, in all honestly, you're the MVP of 'Dancing with the Stars,' judge Carrie Ann Inaba said. 'You're nothing but consistency and focus. You really dance with heart.'

Judge Bruno Tonioli appeared equally smitten by Hines' prowess.

'You're a killer when you play your sport, and a charming dazzler on the dance floor,' he said.  'We all fall in love.'

Standing ovation: Hines begun the contest as a fan favourite and certainly entertained the audience with the impressive number

Bowing out: The three remaining couples are shown on stage during the show's final

And head judge Len Goodman told Hines he was the best footballer-turned dancer they had ever had on the show.

Each of the final couples received three perfect tens for their final performances on an action packed show.

Kirstie showed off her rapidly diminishing figure during a sexy Cha Cha Cha with Maksim.

'I think it would be fun to show the fans and the judges that my dress is half the size it was in week one,' she said. 'I have a lot more strength and a lot more stamina.'

'This journey has been beyond from where I thought this journey would be,' said Kirstie, who had a celebrity fan in the audience in the form of her friend, actress Kelly Preston.

She and Maks danced an energetic and impressive number which led them to their first perfect score of the season.

'A 100-proof cocktail of effervescent fun,' Bruno told them, following the performance. 'Kirstie, you're like a phoenix. You cheating girl, you saved the best for last. Brilliant!'

Len said: 'Kirstie, you have overcome setbacks, improved weaknesses and tonight you have produced your best dance yet.'

The 60-year-old former Cheers actress was clearly sad to leave her dancing experience behind.

'It's the most extraordinary adventure I've ever been on in my life,' she said. ' I want to thank Maks.'

Some fans were left surprised when Mark Ballas and Disney sweetheart Chelsea Kane came in third place, having come consistently top of the leaderboard in the past few weeks.

Magical: Chelsea Kane and Mark Ballas performed a Viennese Waltz to the Harry Potter theme tune

Acrobatic: Although Chelsea and Mark didn't put a foot wrong in their dance, they came third in the contest

The 22-year-old actress was visibly upset at her early elimination, but she may have been cheered by the judges' compliments at she and partner Mark Ballas's Viennese waltz to the Harry Potter theme tune.

'Performances like this are why everyone will know who you are now,' Carrie Ann said. 'But you're a very talented, artistic, beautiful, graceful woman.'

'We really are all under your spell,' Bruno said. 'You are so constant and never put a foot in the wrong place.'

'I'm going to miss this entire experience,' admitted Chelsea.  'Mark has been my best friend. And the fact I'm going to wake up tomorrow morning and all this will be gone is very hard to wrap my head around.'

The season's first eliminated contestant Mike Catherwood performed again, while model Petra Nemcova offered fans a flashback when she danced the waltz to a live rendition of You Raise Me Up sung by special guest Josh Groban.

Striking: Fergie had the crowd on her feet with a futuristic performance of the Black Eyed Peas's new single

Glittering: Fergie's sparkling silver dressed perhaps appropriately matched the Mirror Ball trophy

The show also featured an array of impressive musical guests including Sara Evans, the Go-Go's and the Black Eyed Peas.

Fergie and Will.I.Am's group brought the audience to their feet with their glow-in-the-dark, robot themed performance of their new single Don't Stop the Party from their album The Beginning.

The quartet were dressed in suitable futuristic style with Fergie wearing a short silver minidress and performing on a raised platform under two spotlights.
