Cooking up catastrophe! The Apprentice contestants go bananas over fruit and veg task

By Sarah Fitzmaurice

Last updated at 4:15 PM on 10th May 2011

What do you get when you give £500 to 16 budding entrepreneurs - problems with pasta and outrage over oranges, that’s what.

It’s that time of the year when Sir Alan Sugar returns to our screen to whittle down the contestants to offer just one the coveted job being his Apprentice, which is looking all the more appealing this year thanks to the £250,000 investment.

The new series returns to our screens tonight and the first challenge for the latest intake of wannabes is to take raw fruit and vegetables and use their entrepreneurial flair to produce tempting food options for the hungry workforce of London.

Don't give up your day job: The Girls team, Venture find the fruit and veg task problematic when they opt for a pasta dish

The boys team known as Logic, show just the opposite of that attribute when they all agree to sell soup, that is until minutes later one bright spark highlights the fact that not a single member knows how to make the simple dish- and the idea is duly discarded.

They settle for orange juice but and Sales manager from Canterbury Vincent Disneur leaves Karren Brady wincing as he uses his best flirting techniques, perhaps suited to his local nightclub on a Saturday night, to try to charm females into buying the fruit drink.

Plans turned to pulp: Alex Britez Cabral and Glenn Ward from the boys team Logic are left hand-squeezing the oranges for their fruit juice

Too much technology? The blender appeared too technical for the boys team

That is the least of their problems, their production plans go to pulp when Alex Britez Cabral and Glenn Ward are left hand squeezing the fruit sending them bananas in the final minutes of the task.

And the girls team, Venture, fair no better.

They find their pasta idea particularly problematic and appear to be just as unorganised as the boys in their bid to shine in the first task.

Back in the boardroom: The newest recruits return to our screens tonight on BBC1 at 9pm. Sir Alan takes them with turning £250 of fruit and veg into cool hard cash

And Sir Alan has already made it clear he has no time for ‘losers’.
Sugar, with customarily bluntness, has outlined his deal to the group, one of whom will baG themselves the coveted Apprentice role.

Sir Alan said: ‘I’m going to inject £250,000 of cash and value into your business and you’re going to run it. I’m not looking for a sleeping partner. I’m not Saint Alan, the patron saint of bloody losers. This is an investment and I want some return on my money.’

To find out what catastrophes that latest round of contestants cook up see BBC1 tonight at 9pm.
