The style wars begin! But Cheryl and Paula's purple peril prove both have a long way to go for sartorial supremacy

Some have suggested Barbarella was the inspiration for Cheryl Cole's X Factor USA look. Less generous observers have thrown Chewbacca and Teen Wolf into the mix.

Going head-to-head with Paula Abdul in the battle for style supremacy, it's not surprising Cole wanted to make her mark.

But whatever was going through her mind when she backcombed that bouffant, one can't help but wonder, to paraphrase her L'Oreal ad, was it worth it?

The hair fright - which Cole herself called 'crazy' - topped off a dizzying Seventies-inspired outfit of purple Diane von Furstenberg flares, tangerine Oscar de la Renta blouse and bright turquoise belt.

Trotting along: Cheryl Cole's wide-bottomed trousers covered the singer's feet entirely, giving the impression the star's feet had been surgically removed

The eye-popping outfit would have no doubt done its job of getting Cole noticed - possibly the intention if news that the Geordie has been given a year to make an impact Stateside is to be believed - but was the choice really wise?

The chiffon top was a great colour, with its vivid, juicy tone - but the voluminous cut added pounds. Meanwhile, those trousers were too long and too wide at the bottom, covering Cole's shoes entirely and giving the impression her feet had been surgically removed - or at least reduced to tiny trotters.

Luckily for Cole though, her new style rival Paula Abdul didn't fare much better.

Cowell's new pet panellist may have thought the Yves Saint Laurent silk dress was a safe choice - but her mistake was revealed as soon as she stepped out of her Rolls-Royce and a gust of wind blew up the light fabric of the skirt.

As she crossed her legs awkwardly and grimaced for the cameras, gripping the fabric tightly to her thighs to avoid a Marilyn Monroe-style wardrobe malfunction, Ms Abdul must have wished she had chosen something with more substance.

Still, thanks to Cole's footless faux pas and electric shock hair, the 48-year-old singer still narrowly pipped her to the post.

Wardrobe malfunction: Paula Abdul's silk YSL dress blew up as soon as she stepped out of her car, and the star spent the rest of the photo call grimacing and gripping the fabric to her thighs

Moments after they appeared, online fashion commentators were dissecting the pair, signalling the beginning of what will no doubt become a very public battle.

With the majority critiquing Cole's outfit, it was clear the Internet community awarded this crucial first battle to Abdul.

One comments on Twitter: 'Cheryl Cole's hair... looks like she's seen a ghost (Farrah Fawcett's to be precise - and nicked its hairdo).

Sister act: Paula and Cheryl pose together as filming gets underway on X Factor USA, while right, Paula and Simon embrace as they arrive on the red carpet, cementing Paula's status as Cowell's pet panellist

Keeping fit: The gym look Cheryl sported ahead of her red carpet appearance stood in marked contrast to her big hair day

Another says: 'Did Cheryl Cole arrive at the #xfactorusa auditions on the back of a motorbike without a helmet?...Or a dress sense?', while another added: 'I don't dislike Cheryl Cole at all, but she looks like a bit of a tool on the set of US X Factor. The wind-sock hair? The no-feet trousers?!'

Eager as ever to drum up headlines, Simon Cowell fanned the flames, predicting rivalry between the two female panellists and their other co-star, Pussy Cat Doll's Nicole Scherzinger.

Arriving for the first auditions in Los Angeles yesterday, he said: 'You put pretty girls together it's like three cats in a sack, isn't it. And it needs a bit of a shake.'

And for now, it's not only the fashion contest that Abdul is winning. She has also scored the much-coveted seat next to Cowell on the judging panel.

Cowell told MailOnline that Cole would no longer sit at his side, as she had in the UK show. Instead Abdul will get the prime spot because Cowell says it 'feels right'.

Of course, that may change if Cole proves more popular - Cowell said they may change the seating as the competition rolls on.

But if style rivalry was hotting up between America's sweetheart Abdul and her British counterpart, neither let on.

The two cosied up to pose for photos, with Abdul reporting she was pleased to be working with the UK star: 'I'm excited I get to meet her, I've heard such lovely things about her,' she said.

The 48-year-old even posted a snap of the two on her Twitter page accompanied with the message: 'Pic of me & Cheryl Cole. Gotta tell you about Cheryl- 'The Fierce' is STRONG w/ this one! :) she's lovely! xoP.'

Of course, this show of sisterhood may wane as the fashion wars hot up.

Coat-hangers at the ready? Let the battle commence.

Separated at birth? Cheryl's bouffant has been compared to Chewbacca, left, and Teen Wolf

Bit of a do: Jane Fonda's character in the 1968 film Barbarella was suggested as inspiration for Cheryl's look, while one commentator said it looked like Cheryl had seen Farrah Fawcett's ghost - and 'nicked its hair'
