X Factor: Simon Cowell on verge of signing Alesha Dixon to replace Cheryl Cole

Simon Cowell is on the verge of signing Strictly Come Dancing judge Alesha Dixon to replace Cheryl Cole on his X Factor panel, the Sunday Mirror can reveal.

Luring the singer from the BBC1 dance show would be a sensational coup for ITV1.

Alesha, 32, met the show’s producers Talkback Thames on Wednesday after weeks of talks, and is said to be “thrilled” at the idea of joining TV’s biggest talent show.

Cowell has been agonising over the best replacement for Cole, who has been confirmed as a judge on the US version of the show.

He has been changing his mind on an almost daily basis about who he wants as his four judges.

The men will be Take That singer Gary Barlow and Louis Walsh. But the women have proved to be a more difficult choice.

A source said: “He has spent weeks handpicking the right people – he’s a perfectionist who changes his mind by the hour.

“There have been heated debates, and disagreements almost every day between Cowell, ITV and senior executives over who they need to sign up to give it some stardust.”

Cowell has his heart set on Alesha to complete the panel – believing her gutsy image will be a hit with fans.

And he reckons her experience as a solo artist and singer/rapper with urban outfit Mis-Teeq will give her the clout to critique upcoming talent.

Alesha is also close friends with Gary Barlow, who helped write her album and has been heavily backing her as a natural for the show.

Dannii is likely to be back on the panel, but still in the frame are Girls Aloud’s Sarah Harding, 29, N-Dubz singer Tulisa Contostavlos, 22, and Smile singer Lily Allen, 26.

A source said: “The dynamics on the panel are important and Alesha gets on really well with Gary Barlow

“Alesha is ecstatic. She never thought in a million years that she would be asked.

“But talks have been on for weeks and have been going well. She has had meeting with producers and realises it’s her dream job – an offer she can’t refuse. She’d be sad to turn her back on Strictly, but X Factor is in a completely different league.”

The BBC are bound to be furious at the thought of losing Alesha to their bitter rivals.

Alesha – who was controversially brought in to replace 67-year-old Arlene Phillips on Strictly in 2009 – recently said: “X Factor is an incredible show. It would be a fantastic platform for me as an artist and I’d love it.”

But Cowell – who ITV bosses had feared was throwing all of his energy into the US show – wants to be certain about his choice before Alesha puts pen to paper.

And Cowell still needs to find a replacement for ex-Blue Peter presenter Konnie Huq on ITV2’s Xtra Factor.
