John Travolta made a surprise appearance on Dancing With The Stars to dish out some advice to his friend and contestant Kirstie Alley.

The Grease star visited Alley, 60, and dance partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy during rehearsals at the actress's home.

Introducing himself as the 'Dance Doctor', Travolta had the pair in stitches as he advised Alley to wear sports shoes and told them to release their 'romantic tension'.

Dance Doctor: Hollywood star John Travolta paid a visit to Kirstie Alley as she rehearsed with partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy for tonight's Dancing With The Stars

Advice: The Saturday Night Live star told his long time pal that she and Maks needed to release their 'romantic tension' to become better dancers

Bizarre: Travolta also told Kirstie that she should wear high top trainers instead of her fancy designer heels while visiting the rehearsals at the former Cheers star's lavish home

Travolta has of course had many years of dance practice starring in films like Saturday Night Fever, Pulp Fiction and Grease.

Kirstie's foxtrot to American Woman was overshadowed slightly by her outfit which was not flattering.

The blue jumpsuit with flared bottoms had a see-through panel in the waist which meant she could not wear her usual body control Spanx.

Red, white and blue: Kirstie and Maks did the foxtrot to American Woman in tonight's show which was an American theme

Not a good choice: Kirstie's outfit was not very flattering and did not accentuate all of her curves in the best way

Rippled: Maks showed off his bare torso and had decorated it with an American flag

This then highlighted more of her lumps and bumps and it did not show off her wonderful curves in its best fashion.

And Maks' torso was decorated with an American flag which surely would have made many viewers that much more patriotic.

Travolta's words of wisdom clearly had some effect as Alley got through her foxtrot unscathed and scored 23 out of 30 points.

Close: Kirstie and Maks have obvious chemistry and have not hidden the flirtation between them

The theme tonight was America week which celebrated all things red, white and blue and the celebrities danced to Americana music although still doing sambas and foxtrots.

The first up to perform was New Yorker Ralph Macchio who danced the samba with Russian dancer Karina Smirnoff to Sweet Home Alabama.

The Karate Kid was more cowboy and dressed accordingly as did Karina who looked stunning in an all red sparkling cowgirl outfit.

Americana night: Karate Kid Ralph Macchio was more cowboy kid and danced the samba with Karina Smirnoff to classic tune Sweet Home Alabama

Review: Macchio was told by Len Goodman that he 'wasn't terrible' but was not being consistent

'It wasn't terrible', judge Len Goodman said but added: 'You're not consistent!'

He said Macchio needed to get more rhythm and had not been as good as in prior weeks where he was an early frontrunner.

'It needs fire down below. You have to get your hips going. Give me sex', Bruno Tonioli told Macchio about his lack of rhythm.

Good job: Chris Jericho won great praise from the judges for his Viennese waltz with Cheryl Burke - they glided to America The Beautiful

Revealing: Judge Len Goodman made Burke blush when he told her that she was showing off her 'rocky mountains' for America week in her low cut outfit

Next up was Chris Jericho won great praise for his Viennese waltz with Cheryl Burke as they glided to America The Beautiful.

'It's American week and it's great to see Cheryl showing off her rocky mountains', Goodman said pointing out her very low cut outfit.

Len had told Chris that he would only 'get an eight when he deserved it', after the wrestler had said in rehearsals that he wanted to get a high score.

Not impressed: Model Petra Nemcova and her partner Dmitry Chaplin did not fare well with their quickstep to Elvis Presley's Viva Las Vegas

Party theme: They had a fun time and threw chips from a poker table at the end of their routine

But in the end the Englishman gave Jericho the points he so desperately wanted.

He actually got his best score of the competition with two nines from the other judge giving them a total score of 26.

Suited up: Rapper Romeo looked dapper in a top hat and tails and got his 'Sixties swagger' on while dancing the foxtrot to New York, New York with partner Chelsea Hightower

Improvement: Romeo walked away with a respectable score of 26 - much better than his father Master P who did terribly in Season Two

They tied with Macchio in last place with a 22. It was a tough dance for Nemcova with such long limbs to do the rapid moves but she did a good job and she ended her routine by throwing a handful of chips at a poker table that was on the stage.

Carrie Ann Inaba said she thought Nemcova took a step back but Goodman said her head was too perched to one side and she needed to work on her posture.

All white: Footballer Hines ward got the highest score of the night with a 27 for doing the rumba with partner Kym Johnson to God Bless America

Shaker: Carrie Ann Inaba told Hines that he had the 'best hip action' on the show and Goodman told him that tonight's performance was his 'best dance'

Having already exceeded his father Master P who did abysmally when he was on the show in Season Two. He walked away with a very respectable score of 26.

But highlight of then night was football star Hines Ward who donned a white uniform to dance the rumba with his partner Kym Johnson to God Bless America.

Carrie Ann told Hines that he had the 'best hip action' she's seen and Goodman told him that tonight's performance was his 'best dance'.

Honoured: Playboy model Kendra Wilkinson donned a stars and stripes outfit and performed the 1000th competitive dance on Dancing With The Stars

Patriotic: Kendra and Louis van Amstel decked themselves out like Fourth of July party figures to do the foxtrot

Their costume theme was very much the officer dancing with his girlfriend before being shipped off to sea so will pull at a few heart strings during voting tonight before tomorrow's elimination show.

He got the highest score given out yet this season so far and waltzed away with a 27.

Playboy model and reality star Kendra Wilkinson donned a stars and stripes dress as she had the honour of performing the 1000th competitive dance on Dancing With The Stars.

The young mother and partner Louis van Amstel decked themselves out like Fourth of July figures and did the foxtrot.

High energy: Chelsea Kane and her partner Mark Ballas danced a hot samba and closed the show with a band to Pary in the USA

Into the spirit: The girls got into the spirit of the Americana theme and dressed to the occasion while turning some hot dogs on the barbecue

In rehearsals Kendra had a meltdown because she felt aggrieved that she was told she lacked elegance by Inaba but soon realised that she was just being given advice to help her and it was not a personal put down.

But the pair received praise from the judges and were told they had improved even though their performance lacked fireworks and they only scored 22 out of 30.

And last up was Chelsea Kane and her partner Mark Ballas who danced a hot samba and closed the show with a bang dancing to Miley Cyrus' Party in the USA.

They did an energetic performance and shimmied home with a score of 26.
