Chloe Madeley's on very thin ice - but Richard and Judy's daughter insists her wild child days are behind her

Talk about skating on thin ice. Chloe Madeley, gushes to Hello! magazine about the love between her and her boyfriend of five months, insurance underwriter Glenn Crickmar.

She says: ‘He’s a gentleman and makes me laugh.’ He says: ‘We talk every day about how serious we are.’ There’s the prospect of wedding bells.

Days later, it’s all over and Chloe — the daughter of TV’s Richard and Judy — is seen arm in arm with actor Sam Attwater, who beat her to win this year’s Dancing On Ice on ITV. They canoodle over drinks in a bar and later, wearing Mickey Mouse pyjamas, she reportedly slips into his hotel room. They finally emerge, glowing and blinking into the sunlight, at 11am the next day.

All grown up: The 23-year-old says she wants people to forget the 'bad stuff' in her past - but she's already seemingly swapped one man for another

None of the other cast members had the faintest idea Chloe and Sam — best known for playing Leon Small in EastEnders — had been getting close during the series.

The technical crew, however, much more alert to these things, began referring to Chloe and Sam as ‘Chlam’.

Perhaps, though, the warning signs were there when Chloe and I met just a couple of days before she and Attwater went public.

I asked her about Glenn — whom  she started seeing shortly after breaking up with David McNidder, her boyfriend of three years — and she was non-commital, to say the least.

‘Glenn and I met through my brother. We did get close very quickly and he’s been really supportive, but I can’t believe how little I’ve seen him,’ she said. ‘I’m not going to see him now for the next five weeks really because I’ll be touring in the Dancing On Ice arena show. So we’re going to take a bit of a step back, then come back to it after that.’

Apple of their eye: Chloe Madeley with her proud parents Richard and Judy

It’s only when I play back the tape of our interview that I become aware Sam’s name pops up with amusing regularity. Sam is ‘amazing,’ and her ‘best friend,’ and watching him win was ‘fantastic’. At one point she tells me they are ‘basically the same person in two different bodies’.

Once the cat is out of the bag about their romance, I go back to her to ask what’s really going on. ‘I’m not saying anything about Sam and me except to say that I’m a single girl and we get on really well together,’ she says coyly.

‘Glenn and I decided that as I’d be completely exhausted after every show, too tired even to talk, it was no basis for a relationship.

‘The friendship with Sam just developed. We’re practically the same age, we laugh at the same things and, of course, we have the skating in common. We’ve been thrown together now for months, and we will still be seeing each other every day on tour, so who knows where it’s all leading?’

Of course, whether this fledgling relationship will survive in the real world when the Dancing On Ice bubble bursts following the tour remains to be seen.

Nice on the ice: Chloe, far right, says she's focused on the show and has no other plans after it - but her ambitious personality suggests we could be seeing a lot more of her

Chloe maintains she has no plans beyond a retreat to the Madeley home in Cornwall. ‘I haven’t been able to go for six months because of Dancing On Ice and it’s killing me. I think of it every day and I miss it so much.

‘Where we are is very isolated and incredibly beautiful, in the middle of rolling green hills and near the ocean. It’s a safe haven for us all, we adore it and always have done. So I can’t wait to go back there.’

At 23, and famous only because of her parents, she would have been only too aware that taking part in any kind of reality TV show is a gamble.

For all that it’s an opportunity for the tarnished celebrities to boost their profile or undergo a public rehabilitation, all too often it proves to be a platform on which they get to demonstrate how obnoxious they are. Think Gillian McKeith in I’m A Celebrity . . . and George Galloway in Big Brother.

Love on the rocks: Chloe Madeley with ex-boyfriend Glenn Carwick were only recently an item, but the Ice queen has been linked to fellow handsome contestant Sam Attwater, below

Chloe’s kept a low profile, apart from some unwelcome publicity brought on by an unfortunate drink-driving incident. So when she was approached for Dancing On Ice, she had to weigh up the risks. As she puts it: ‘If the public decide they don’t like you, it makes it difficult to get work in television again.

‘It was a gamble. I’ve made mistakes in the past — and I’m not blaming it on being my parents’ daughter, I take complete responsibility — but I hoped that doing a show like this would prove to people that I have grown up. I feel like everyone knew the bad stuff about me before Dancing On Ice and now I hope they see another side of me.’

The ‘bad stuff’ has, of course, been well documented. In 2009, Chloe was charged with drink-driving and banned from driving for 20 months after crashing near her north London home. Just three months earlier, she had been photographed smoking cannabis with friends.

Then there’s those sexy photoshoots, including one for lads’ magazine FHM in which she posed wearing a skimpy outfit and stockings.

Hot legs: The Dancing On Ice tour kicks off

In fairness, it’s hardly Keith Richards rock ’n’ roll territory, but it was enough for her to ha ve secured a public reputation as the out-of-control celebrity daughter — a label she believes unfair.

‘The negative stuff was stupid and embarrassing and a huge mistake,’ she says. ‘But I’m not this crazy wild child. Maybe for a few weeks when I was 21. It’s a fun label for people to bestow upon you, but I don’t think I was one.’

In any case, lacing up those skate seems to have paid off: the public voted her through to the final last month, and while she came third she’s clearly thrilled to have got that far.

‘I was exhausted, but in an incredibly good mood,’ she says. ‘I didn’t know how far I was going to make it in the competition because there were so many well-known names.’

Her parents were behind her all the way, attending every Sunday performance — and, in her father’s case, heckling the judges after he felt they marked her too low for one of her routines. If she’s embarrassed by this, however, she doesn’t show it.

‘I know a few people had a few things to say about them being a bit over the top in the audience. It makes me angry, because everyone else has their parents cheering them on.

‘Mine just get more camera time. They were doing what any mum and dad would do, and I really wanted them there.’

Wild child: Richard and Judy were proud of Chloe, who put her slightly dubious past behind her to compete in the ice skating competition

Richard Madeley getting over-excited was the least of it this series, of course, because any action on the ice was more than matched by reports of blossoming romances and tension backstage — the latter, in particular, between judge Jason Gardiner and Karen Barber, the former judge who was demoted this series to mentor.

In one exchange, Gardiner announced on air that Barber’s opinion ‘didn’t matter’ — a retort that led to hundreds of complaints.

‘They’re not really friends now,’ says Chloe. ‘But they did manage to leave it behind them and carry on.’

Most of the time the competitors had very little to do with the judges. ‘I don’t know if it’s coincidence or deliberate, but the judges kept their distance from us,’ she says. ‘They kept themselves pretty separate. It’s a bit like school.’

And, like school, the pupils all ‘gossip like mad,’ she says. ‘We moaned if we were on the receiving end, but when we found out something about someone else we’d all be huddled in the corner smoking and swapping titbits.’

And there were plenty of romantic rumours. Early on in the series — while Chloe was still with Glenn Crickmar — Sam Attwater and his skating partner Brianne Delcourt enjoyed a brief fling.

Sam was then subsequently photographed kissing skating professional Alexandra Schauman (whose husband, just to complicate matters further, was the skating partner of Elen Rivas, the former fiancee of England footballer Frank Lampard).

Ms Rivas herself, who made an early exit from the competition, was reported to be enjoying a hot romance with Peter Andre off the ice, although cynics pointed out they share the same agent and the publicity was mutually beneficial. The series has finished and so, we are told, has the relationship.

The romance that blossomed between Hollyoaks actress Jennifer Metcalfe and skating partner Sylvain Longchambon, meanwhile, endures to this day. ‘They went out drinking after their first skating session and that was that’ Chloe reveals.

‘They fully fell in love — in a matter of days. We all heard about it, but when we all came together to shoot promotional shots for the series it was obvious. It was lovely to see. So now Jen spends half her time up north doing Hollyoaks and half of her time in France with his family.’

Then, of course, there was the relationship that developed between Karen Barber and Christopher Dean, who split from his wife, former ice-skating champion Jill Trenary, last year after 16 years of marriage.

Karen is married to one of the show’s trainers, ice-dancer Steve Pickavance, but in January she and Dean issued a joint statement admitting they were a couple after photographs of them kissing appeared.

Chloe says the cast had known for weeks. ‘They’re very professional but, of course, we did have lulls in the day when we weren’t skating and we’d see them have those moments together,’ says Chloe. ‘It’s lovely. I think they’re a great couple.’

According to Chloe, in fact, all the girls on the show harbour a bit of a secret crush on Christopher Dean. ‘I have to say I am a little bit in love with him — and whenever I said it to anyone they all gave me that knowing nod. Everyone’s got a bit of a crush on him.’

Beyond the ice show tour, she has nothing lined up, although there are reports she has been approached to be a showbusiness reporter on This Morning, her parent’s old stomping ground. It would be ironic, given how keen Chloe is to forge her own path, although she says she’s ‘never had a problem’ being referred to as Richard and Judy’s daughter.

‘Why would I?’ she says. ‘They’re incredibly intelligent, successful, wonderful parents to have and I’m very proud of them.’

Given they’ve said they’re unlikely to do more television, does she feel she’s now taking up the baton?

‘Oh, calm down. This is me taking part in Dancing On Ice against their 23-year journalistic career,’ she says. ‘But it would be cool to be given the opportunity to hang around.’

If it’s down to determination alone, then I’d put money on it.

The Dancing On Ice Tour starts tomorrow in Sheffield.
