Second best for Cheryl Cole?

By COLIN ROBERTSON, TV Editor and RICHARD WHITE

Published: Today

CHERYL Cole will become a MENTOR on the US X Factor if her dream of being a judge is scuppered - under consolation plans being thrashed out by Simon Cowell.

Simon, 51, wants her as a judge but is struggling to convince American channel Fox that she is famous enough.

If execs insist she cannot have the prized role, then she will still feature elsewhere on the series, say sources.

The mentor position will see her helping the wannabes with stage presence and singing. Cheryl will also sing as a guest artist, helping to launch her US recording career.

A source said: "Every day it looks more and more unlikely that Cheryl will get her dream job - so Simon is looking at alternatives.

"The mentor role is one idea. She knows what it's like to audition as she was discovered on Popstars: The Rivals."

Cheryl, 27, has also been linked with a role similar to the one Simon's ex Sinitta fills on the UK show, where she helps him pick acts at the judges' houses stage.

If Cheryl proves popular, Fox bosses have agreed to consider her as a judge for the second season.

A family friend said: "Cheryl wants to be on the big stage in America but is finding herself having to compromise.

"No one is bigger than Fox, not even Simon Cowell. It is their millions and they want a big return. Cheryl cannot guarantee that."

Mariah Carey, Jessica Simpson, Nicole Scherzinger and Paula Abdul are all in the frame for the judging role.

The show is set to start in September.
