Rated R: Rihanna 'fuming' after being told to tone down performance of controversial new single S&M at Brit Awards

She's known for her raunchy routines and sizzling stage outfits - but Rihanna has been told to tone down her sexy antics ahead of her appearance at this year's Brit Awards.

The Good Girl Gone Bad star, 22, had planned on an eye-popping performance of her controversial new single S&M for Tuesday's ceremony.

But show bosses have asked her to change some of the song's more risqué lyrics as the event at London's O2 Arena is being broadcast live on ITV1.

Raunchy: Rihanna launched her advert for her first fragrance, Reb'l Fleur yesterday with a sultry new video

The offending verse involves the words: 'Sex in the air, I don't care/I love the smell of it.'

A source told today's Mirror: 'Rihanna is fuming about the situation - and it's left Brit bosses in a panic over what she will do on the night. She may scrap performing S&M altogether nowa nd choose to do a "safe" pop number to keep the prudes at bay.'

The single has already been banned by Radio 1 and the raunchy video has been banned in 11 countries because of its near-the-knuckle imagery featuring the star sucking on a banana and wearing latex bondage gear.

Rihanna, who launched the sultry advert for her first ever fragrance Reb'l Fleur yesterday,  also caused outrage on last year's X Factor after her X-rated pre-watershed performance, which saw her make suggestive dance moves in skimpy stage clothes..

Christina Aquilera also sparked outrage with her performance of single Burlesque on the same show, which lead to a record-breaking 4,500 complaints about the 'disgusting' routines and an Ofcom investigation.

Meanwhile, Rihanna's performance at tomorrow's Grammys is also under threat after the star was struck down with bronchitis and laryngitis.

Bit tied up: Rihanna doesn't hold back in the video for her new single

Controversial: The video for the star's single S&M - seen here - has already been banned in 11 countries

Despite her illness, she is still rehearsing and remains hopeful of making the event at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, where she will perform her duet Love The Way You Lie with Eminem.

She tweeted today: 'Bronchitis and laryngitis boo! I'm still goin' to rehearsals tho! Sunday is everything.'

A source confirmed to website Radar online that the singer was determined to get on stage.

'Rihanna is on steroids and antibiotics to get her as prime time ready as possible for Sunday night,' the source told the website.

Rude girl: The single - which featured S&M gear as seen here in the video - has already gone to Number 20 in the UK singles chart on downloads alone ahead of its official release

'Rihanna doesn't want to let Eminem down, but he would totally understand if she couldn't perform.

'The duo are scheduled to rehearse again on Saturday at Staples, but she probably won't be using her voice a lot at that time, she is saving it for Sunday night.'

The star is also thought to be performing What's My Name? with rapper Drake.

Rihanna pulled out of a performance on Thursday night for the Women's Cancer Research Fund charity concert in Los Angeles, saying she had the 'flu.

This week the Barbadian singer agreed to lift a restraining order against ex-boyfriend Chris Brown so that they could both attend the Grammys.

Brown, convicted of domestic violence against the singer, appeared in court two weeks ago for a progress hearing when his lawyer Mark Geragos asked the Los Angeles judge to lift the restraining order.

Judge Schnegg did not grant the request immediately but said he would consult Rihanna's attorney David Etra to get approval, which has now been granted.
