so bad its riveting viewing

They certainly have some odd ways

Women do not work they cook, clean and have babies

Men are not allowed in the kitchen whatsoever!!!

Only married women can drink???

as for those dresses so wrong for such young children but they are even at that young age on the look out for their future husbands most girls are married around 16

My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding claims to celebrate a unique traditional culture. Pull the other one, it makes Jordan look classy!

Like many brides, Bridget wants a big dress for her wedding. ‘If I had a small one, it wouldn’t be special to me, it wouldn’t be different,’ she says.

Her idea of different is, well, different. ‘I want it bigger,’ she says, making a gesture with her arms to indicate the size she desires. Oh dear. Dead classy alert.

Bridget does not look as if she means the typically elegant proportions of a normal bridal gown. In fact, she looks as though she is demonstrating the international hand signals for ‘holding an elephant under each armpit’.

Fairytale:%20Pat%20and%20Sam%20married%20on%20Channel%204s%20Big%20Fat%20Gypsy%20Wedding%20

Fairytale: Pat and Sam married on Channel 4's Big Fat Gypsy Wedding

And when the big day dawns, Bridget’s dress is even bigger than you could imagine.

It’s a giant puffball of crispy netting — a pumpkin-shaped, maxi-pouffe of glittering nylon gauze.

One stray spark and she will go up like the Hindenburg. But Bridget doesn’t care. She is living the dream. ‘It felt like I was Cinderella for a day,’ she says.

Teen bride Bridget is one of the stars of My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding, a series of documentaries filmed by the Cutting Edge team for Channel 4.

The programmes reveal the eye-popping, extravagant nuptials that appear to be the norm today among young traveller couples. Initially a one-off show, My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding has been developed into a six part, prime-time series.

Traditional:%20Sam%20says%20that%20all%20the%20guests%20expected%20her%20to%20choose%20something%20modest,%20but%20she%20wanted%20to%20prove%20she%20was%20one%20of%20them

Traditional: Guests expected Sam to choose something modest, but she wanted to prove she was one of them

In a carefully sympathetic, scrupulously politically-correct way, viewers are given an insight into the lives and times of the modern gypsy.

Here we are shown that ceremony and ritual are all-important, providing the travellers with crampons to cling on to the rubble of their ‘diminishing’ way of life.

So we have the lurid weddings, the gaudy parties and the unsettling ritual of the first Holy Communions.

Here, feisty little gypsy girls are primped, curled and made up like showgirls by their mothers and grannies to receive the Holy Sacrament.

Bling:%20Sam%20wore%20diamante%20gloves%20and%20had%20mechanical%20butterflies%20all%20over%20her%20dress

Bling: Sam wore diamante gloves and had mechanical butterflies all over her dress

These tiny toughies in their Sunday-best frills are oddly affecting, yet there’s no escaping the fact that in their high heels, tight dresses and false eyelashes, they look like the can-can chorus line from a munchkin strip club.

Not little girls about to embark on their spiritual journey to inner peace.

One six-year-old, called Mary Ann, was even given a spray tan - something she thought she was plenty old enough for.

‘At six, you are big and at one or two you are small,’ she explained, as viewers rubbed their eyes in disbelief.

Cramped:%20Sam%20struggled%20to%20fit%20her%2020-stone%20dress%20into%20her%20Cinderella%20carriage%20as%20she%20headed%20to%20the%20church

Classy: The carriage was identical to the one Katie Price had when she married Peter Andre in 2005

Perhaps it’s not surprising that My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding has proved an unlikely hit for Channel 4, pulling in its highest ratings since the glory days of Big Brother back in 2008.

This week’s compelling episode had a peak audience of 7.4 million, who tuned in to watch non-gypsy Sam, a 17-year-old barmaid, marry her gypsy boyfriend Pat, a tree surgeon.

‘She looks more like a traveller than a traveller,’ said Thelma the wedding dressmaker, and it was difficult to argue with her blunt appraisal.

Tight%20fit:%20Sam%20struggled%20to%20get%20her%20truly%20incredible%20gown%20down%20the%20narrow%20aisle%20of%20the%20church

Tight fit: Sam struggled to get her truly incredible gown down the narrow aisle of the church

Corset is! The bridesmaids wore black and pink corseted dresses with trains for the ceremony

Among the traveller community, it’s frowned upon to marry an outsider, but Sam established her gypsy cred in a shocking pink, 14-stone wedding dress that lit up in the dark and had animatronic butterflies attached.

Yes, it was a frock horror, but it also had its own astonishing, nightmarish beauty.

Walking down the aisle, Sam looked like a day-glo cross between a Christmas tree and a crochet toilet-roll holder.

Lavish:%20Sam%20Norton,%2017,%20wore%20a%2020st%20pink%20taffeta%20dress%20embellished%20with%20mechanical%20butterflies%20on%20the%20bodice%20and%20UV%20lights%20in%20the%20veil

Lavish: Sam Norton, 17, wore a 20st pink dress with mechanical butterflies on the bodice and lights in the veil

Over-the-top:%20Sam%20and%20Patrick%20at%20their%20wedding%20reception,%20where%20the%20lights%20on%20her%20dress%20come%20into%20their%20own

Over-the-top: Sam and Patrick at their wedding reception, where the lights on her dress come into their own

She remains the bride to beat, the girl who put the cringe into crinoline.

Elsewhere, gypsy Josie’s wedding dress had the kind of tasteful thigh-length split at the front that even Cher in her heyday might have baulked at.

Josie explained that she had tanning-bed treatments every week before her wedding, determined to get so brown that ‘all people will see are my eyes and teeth’.

Loved-up:%20After%20the%20ceremony,%20Pat%20insisted%20Sam%20is%20the%20perfect%20wife%20for%20him

Loved-up: After the ceremony, Pat insisted Sam is the perfect wife for him

Meanwhile, when munchkin Margarita stumped up to the church in her enormous crinoline Communion dress, all the other little girls at the ceremony - all non-travellers in their plain white dresses and scrubbed faces — pointed at painted Margarita and laughed.

It was an uncomfortable moment. But are viewers slyly being invited and encouraged to do exactly the same?

Perhaps the freak show that is My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding has more in common with Big Brother than just high ratings.

Certainly, the weddings are spectacular. Girls stagger into church in enormous dresses that sometimes weigh more than they do, watched by a community that lives alongside, but detached from, mainstream society.

New%20lifestyle:%20Sam%20is%20having%20to%20give%20up%20her%20old%20life%20and%20take%20on%20a%20whole%20new%20life%20living%20in%20a%20caravan

New lifestyle: Sam is having to give up her old life and take on a whole new life living in a caravan

The Cutting Edge viewpoint in the programmes is strictly non-critical and non-judgmental.

No difficult questions are asked of the travellers and very few men from the community allow themselves to be filmed or interviewed.

When an older woman called Mary Doll (‘I was born in a wagon in Cork’) complains that the refusal of planning permission on their Green Belt site amounts to persecution, no one demurs.

Instead, there are syrupy voiceovers about a community ‘struggling’ with a modern world which ‘threatens to destroy it’. How much longer, asks a hand-wringing Channel 4, can they preserve their unique and traditional culture?

Specific:%20Pat%20eyes%20up%20a%20trailer%20in%20the%20couples%20price%20range,%20but%20admits%20they%20are%20looking%20for%20a%20vehicle%20without%20a%20toilet

Specific: Pat eyes up a trailer in the couple's price range, but admits they are looking for a vehicle without a toilet

Yet, what’s so traditional about aspiring to dress like Katie Price on your wedding day, which all the young girls do?

One gypsy bride, clearly a stranger to irony and not superstitious at all, even insisted upon being driven to the church in the exact pumpkin coach that Price rode in to marry Peter Andre.

And at the Holy Communion party, the little girls gyrate suggestively to Lady Gaga and reveal that they learned all their dance moves from watching Beyonce and Shakira on television.

Surely there is nothing fantastically unique or gypsy heritage about that? And at no point does anyone ask the difficult but killer question - where does all the money come from for the outlandish and lavish wedding dresses?

Beauty%20queen:%20The%20little%20girl%20struggles%20to%20get%20down%20the%20steps%20of%20her%20caravan%20in%20the%20massive%20dress

Beauty queen: The little girl struggles to get down the steps of her caravan in the massive dress

Yet the message repeated over and over is how passionate the travellers are about protecting their way of life, which they do not want to be ‘diluted’ by outsiders.

They claim to be misunderstood, but are not without their own suspicions and snobberies about the world beyond their own.

‘We don’t let our children mix with outsiders,’ one traveller said. ‘We live as a culture. Our children don’t drink.’

Look at us! Molly and her cousins show off their outfits following the communion ceremony

There is also much talk about and pride taken in the fact that gypsy girls are not allowed to date or be alone with boys before marriage.

Getting married young is the norm in a society where girls are considered on the shelf at 20, and where most get married soon after their 16th birthday.

The gypsy brides are expected to be virgins on their wedding day and they marry for life.

Getting%20bronzed:%20Six-year-old%20Mary%20Ann%20had%20a%20spray%20tan%20before%20her%20holy%20communion

Getting bronzed: Six-year-old Mary Ann had a spray tan before her holy communion

Its%20sticky!%20Mary%20Ann%20said%20she%20didnt%20like%20the%20feel%20of%20the%20spray%20tan%20but%20insisted%20she%20isnt%20too%20young%20to%20have%20one

It's sticky! Mary Ann said she didn't like the feel of the spray tan but insisted she isn't too young to have one

In the traveller community, divorce is almost entirely unheard of, women are not allowed to work and for many the idea of girls going to school is seen as ‘a waste of time’.

This cannot be true of all traveller communities, but on this evidence, girls seem to be treated as second-class citizens doomed to lead stunted lives.

And that’s the kind of tradition we could all do without.

Finishing%20touches:%20The%20pair%20ensure%20their%20outfits%20are%20completely%20perfect%20before%20they%20leave%20the%20trailer

Finishing touches: The pair ensure their outfits are completely perfect before they leave the trailer

Thelma, the wedding dressmaker, the Liverpool seamstress who sews frothy fantasy into wedding day reality for these young women, tells of a conversation she had with one gypsy bride about domestic abuse. ‘Well, the wife must have done something wrong,’ was the girl’s response.

It certainly makes you think. It certainly puts the extravagant wedding dresses into some kind of context in this world of harsh contrasts.

Provocative:%20One%20of%20the%20young%20girls%20wore%20a%20black%20and%20pink%20outfit%20as%20she%20danced%20outside%20the%20trailer

Provocative: One of the young girls wore a black and pink outfit as she danced outside the trailer

To outside eyes, the frocks might be laughable. Look past the tiaras and the tulle, and what lies beneath seems to be girls almost bred in captivity to be brides.

No wonder that for one day in their lives they are allowed to dress like a princess and make all their dreams come true.

Correct me if I`m wrong,  but they are travellers and not  genuine Gypsies aren`t they?   It is compulsive viewing though.

Well it's true! Pat was quite tidy from certain angles.

I'm going to have to watch this on E4 tomorrow, I'm working late all week. Loved the funny kids, that little Irish one had me howling. Cheyenne was also amazing, I thought she was cool as. Her pal never said much though.

No surprises at the tone of the DM article.
