American football star Rick Fox was booted out of Dancing With The Stars in last night's surprise elimination.

Judges were left open-mouthed as the ex-NBA star and his pro-dance partner Cheryl Burke were voted off on Tuesday night after failing to impress US TV audiences with their quick step.

The two had earned their highest scores yet for their ballroom efforts on Monday's special 200th episode.

They waved goodbye despite judge Len Goodman having described their performance as 'full throttle', and both Bruno Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inaba agreeing it was their best yet.

'Quite a surprise in the ballroom tonight,' commented co-host Brooke Burke.

After the decision was announced, 6ft 6ins tall Fox, whose TV actress girlfriend Eliza Dushku was in the audience with his young daughter, said he felt surprised at the result.

'I didn't have any idea, you try to stay in positive frame of mind,' said the 41-year-old hunk.

'It's the seventh week though and the numbers do decline and someone has to go home.

'It's been a transformational journey for me, it's been amazing. My relationship has transformed, with my girlfriend and my daughter.

'It the most enjoyable time having her here and sharing this with me.'

Fox was hailed by host Tom Bergeron for injecting the 'smooth' and 'suave' into proceedings.

'You will be sadly missed,' he said.

Still in contention for the coveted season 10 title are R&B singer Brandi, Sarah Palin's daughter Bristol Palin, TV actor Kyle Massey, NFL star Kurt Warner and movie star Jennifer Grey.

Stress has started kicking in for all the contestants this week, with some breaking down in tears and others nursing injuries.

The prime-time show's relentless challenges took an emotional toll on single mum Bristol whose tears flowed backstage after Monday's performance.

'I'm exhausted, this is week seven now and I've been away from my home for the last two months,' she sobbed to pro-dance partner Mark Ballas.

'I'm tired, I want to go home and want to see my son. I know we got our highest scores ever but I'm just exhausted.'

Dirty Dancing actress Jennifer, 50, complained that her body felt like it had been 'hit by a truck' after weeks of hardcore practising.

'You have this time limit in your life in front of 22 million people to learn something, perfect it and perform it,' she told viewers.

Tuesday's star-studded show, which was interrupted regularly with U.S. midterm election returns, featured musical performances by country music starlet Taylor Swift and legendary entertainer Rod Stewart.

Swift, 20, briefly took over the microphone after Bergeron mock fainted at her presence on stage.

The cast from Broadway musical Mary Poppins also wowed audiences during the live TV event.
