X Factor final 12: Backlash as Cheryl Cole dumps Gamu Nhengu

By Tom Bryant 4/10/2010

X Factor was last night hit by a massive backlash after hotly tipped Gamu Nhengu was axed.

Fans vented their fury because Cheryl Cole put Cher Lloyd and Katie Waissel into the finals despite their dreadful Judges' Houses performances.

Itv bosses were braced for thousands of complaints over the controversial decision.

Gamu, 18, was said to be "devastated" by Cheryl's choice and told a pal: "I can't believe it's over. I just don't know what to say."

A source said: "She doesn't understand how others could mess up their performances so badly yet are put through. It's really unfair."

One fuming viewer said: "Cheryl should not be allowed near the judging panel ever again."

Here J She was accused of "blatant" double standards for putting through Katie, 24, and Cher, 17. X Factor viewers recalled Cheryl refused to put through Annastasia Baker in 2008 after the contestant had a similar meltdown at Judges' Houses stage.

Cheryl told Annastasia: "You absolutely fell apart in front of my eyes. That would be a worry for me."

In another twist last night, rumours emerged that one of the dumped finalists from each category could get a wildcard entry into the show. This could pave the way for Gamu - or any of the other girls in the category - to earn a dramatic recall.

But a well-placed source said: "Cheryl would not have known this beforehand. Her decision was based on her strongly held opinions at the time."

Viewers on Saturday night watched in disbelief as Cher and Katie fell apart in front of Cheryl and her assistant Will.i.am. Cher, who had a sore throat, was in tears and was unable to carry on while Katie delivered a shambolic performance, also breaking down halfway through her song.

In stark contrast Gamu, who has not put a foot wrong in the competition, delivered another faultless performance.

Before the news of her axing, the Scottish teenager said: "It's been so great so far. It's been amazing. I don't want it to end here.

"I don't want to have to tell mom that I didn't make it, Then we don't have anything to celebrate. If I got a yes that's my way of showing her that she did a great job."

But she was left inconsolable after Cheryl rejected her for not having "star quality".

The Girls Aloud star told Gamu: " You are extremely adorable. You've got a great voice. It's just a question for me now as to whether you brought the star quality that I was looking for yesterday."

X Factor last night insisted Cheryl's decision was based on performances throughout the competition.

They denied Cheryl's failure to attended bootcamp because of her malaria "impaired" her judgment.

Internet message-board Digital Spy was flooded by angry viewers. One post said: "No way should Katie and Cher go through. They both messed up big time last night and are not the best singers by far."

Another asked: "Why put the contestants through it all just to reward the ones who bottle it?" And a fan demanded: "Some consistency is in order. Make a decision on what just happened in front of your eyes. To do otherwise is unfair to those who audition."

After getting through, Katie said: "I feel confused, bewildered, enchanted. If I can get this far then I believe I can win it."

A more down to earth Cher said: "It's a lot to take in. Every time I perform I learn a little bit and it keeps building up and building up. I feel I'm doing quite well but there's a more building to come.

X Magazine is out tomorrow exclusively in Tesco.

People were going nuts last night about this when I was doing twitter @TheXFactorUK. Katie and Cher are NOT popular, not at all. Cher will definitely have the loony hardcore fanbase that I see every year but she's not going to win, I can tell you that right now.

Yeah and failing that, Treyc might get in...I can feel the week-5 curse returning and calming Katie or Cher
Catwoman: "For one if I was a bloke, I would not flirt with you two. I have standards."
Toots: "If I had a figure like Ola's, I'd wear that outfit to Sainsburys!"
