X Factor Gamu to be deported?

By JOHN McDONNELL

Published: Today

ZIMBABWE-BORN X Factor hopeful Gamu Nhengu may be forced to pull out of X Factor after her passport was seized by immigration officials.

The 18-year-old singer is one of the bookies' favourites to win the show, but may be booted out of the country unless her mother Nokutula, 38, can convince the Home Office to let the family stay in Britain when she pleads her case on Thursday.

After fleeing Zimbabwe alone eight years ago, Nokutula was living in Scotland under a work permit visa, which also covered Gamu and her brothers Milton, 12, and Marty, 10, who were reunited with their mother five years ago.

But the visa has not been extended and the whole family will have to leave Britain unless they are granted permission to stay by officials.

Gamu, who we can reveal has made it through to the judges' houses stage of X Factor, would have had to pull out of the show if she was required to fly abroad to stay with her mentor because she no longer has a passport.

But luckily Cheryl, who is mentoring the girls this year, opted to film her segment of the show in a house in Dorset in the south west of England, allowing Gamu to continue in the competition for at least a little bit longer.

The family's lawyer, Frances Farrell, has announced: "Discussions are ongoing and we hope the situation can be resolved."
