Nicole Scherzinger was watched by her boyfriend Lewis Hamilton as she competed in the final of Dancing With The Stars last night.

And it seems the Formula 1 racing champion was a good luck charm for his Pussycat Doll as Nicole topped the leader board at the end of the series finale.

The 30-year-old and her partner Derek Hough finished the show in joint top position with the underdogs, sportscaster Erin Andrews and her partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy, both picking up 55 points.

Support: Lewis Hamilton gives his girlfriend Nicole Scherzinger a kiss following her second dance, the freestyle, on Dancing With The Stars

Aiming high: Nicole Scherzinger and Derek Hough finished joined top at the end of the Dancing With The Stars finale on 55 points

However the show's favourites, U.S. figure skater Evan Lysacek and partner Anna Trebunskaya faltered on their freestyle leaving them with just 52 points.

Nicole's first routine, danced to Chris de Burgh's Lady In Red, was praised for its sensual lines.

But a small mistake towards of the end of the routine cost them a perfect score after Carrie Ann Inaba docked them a point when Derek picked Nicole up at the end, deeming it a lift, despite Derek's claims that the dance was over.

Bruno Tonioli raved: 'Eroticism, sensuality, romance seamlessly woven into something of extreme beauty - this was superlative!'

Len Goodman: I loved the subtlty of the choreography, there was some really in your eyes stuff but there were some quiet moments which I thought was very, very appealing.

Carrie Ann Inaba: The only way you could grow was to become vulnerable and to allow the edges to soften. And this was so mesmerising, I couldn't take my eyes off any bit of the moment...and then I saw the lift at the end.

High praise: Judge Bruno Tonioli told the duo their dance had 'Eroticism, sensuality, romance seamlessly woven into something of extreme beauty'

Positive feedback: Derek and Nicole were happy to receive praise from the judging panel - they performed a Rumba to Chris De Burgh's Lady In Red

And a small mistake in an otherwise perfect performance likewise cost the pair in their second dance, the freestyle.

The couple's combination of jitterbug, jive, quickstep and hip-hop was praised by Len Goodman as 'fantastic.'

But a hiccup on the last lift - where Nicole almost tumbled off her partner's shoulders - left them with just 27 out of 30.

Bruno: 'Dazzling, dazzling creativity, you pushed the bar so high...it's incredible what you've done. There was a little slip at the end because what you were trying to do has never been done before. A-ma-zing!'

After the routine Dereck Hough high-fived Lewis Hamilton before girlfriend Nicole Scherzinger locked-lips with the racing ace.

Although the pop star and partner Derek Hough have been praised for their performances throughout the recent tenth season of the celebrity dancing contest, critics have said Scherzinger has an unfair advantage over some other contestants because she is a professional dancer.

Plenty of energy: The couple followed their Rumba with a freestyle dance to Elvis Presley's A Little Less Conversation

But Pussycat Dolls founder Robin Antin defended Scherzinger, saying she had no previous experience in many of the dances she performed on the show.

She said: 'She might be a dancer, trained from when she was younger. When I found her...she wasn't confident, she didn't have what she has now.

'She never knew anything about ballroom, about partner dancing, about Rumba, Tango. That girl has never done any of that. She wants to learn and she puts her mind to it. She's such a hard worker and that makes her, to me, that's a winner.'

Meanwhile Erin Andrews and Maksim put on a spirited version of the Samba that was both sexy and fun.

The two were praised by Len for keeping their clothes on and for their improvement, while Carrie Ann told them: 'You moved yourself up three notches.'

Their hip swiveling and high energy brought great results, as the two scored a 29 out of 30 for their first dance of the night.

Dazzling: The duo's final 'incredible' dance received 27 points out of 30

Anna and Evan Lysacek did a whimsical Viennese Waltz to a cover of Billy Joel’s Piano Man, and their weeks dancing together paid off.

Carrie Ann told them: 'Last time you did this you had a lot of problems…This time a lot of that was gone.' The two were off to a “good start” with a 28 out of 30.

Bruno: 'Very good on hold and I like to see the connection between you two. Smiling, romantic, sweet - I could see the sparks between you.'

Len: 'It had grace, it had elegance, it had a lot of movement. Overall a wonderful job.'

Erin and Maksim, decided on a contemporary lyrical form of dance for their freestyle.

The risky dance was aided with props and while the audience seemed to be in awe of the couple's dance routine, the judges had mixed emotions about the performance.

Sexy: Erin Andrews and Maksim Chmerkovskiy performed a Samba which was described as fun and a marked improvement for the couple

Cheers! Erin Andrews and Maksim give judge Len Goodman a smooch following his high praise of their performance

They ended up with 26 out of 30 for their performance.

Before they hit the dancefloor for the final time a tearful Anna Trebunskaya admitted: 'It’s been proven that whoever wins the freestyle, wins the competition.'

The outfits, the dance and music made this nostalgic routine a winner for some, however the judges were less impressed.

Stress: Anna Trebunskaya was tearful and worried before her final performance

'You looked demented,' said Bruno. While Carrie Ann told them: 'That was odd.'

With 24 out of 30,  their final score was 52 out of 60.
