Starring role: Susan Boyle, pictured this week, is wanted by Glee producers

Her sparkling success has been unlikely to say the least.

And now Susan Boyle is set to appear on primetime American TV - as a dinner lady in the smash hit comedy Glee.

And, incredibly, she has been given the nod for the role by the show's producers over the stunning A-lister Jennifer Lopez.

The Britain's Got Talent star has been lined up for a role in season two's Christmas episode.

Talking about Boyle's potential role, Glee co-creator Ryan Murphy said: 'I have two words for you: Lunch. Lady.

'I think Kurt [played by Chris Colfer] would just die to give her a Christmas make-over. I don't even know if she's interested, but it's been pitched,' he added.

Boyle, 49, is on the same record label, Columbia, as the Glee cast.

She shot to fame on Britain's Got Talent, when her performance of I Dreamed A Dream from Les Miserables so memorably stunned Simon Cowell and the judging panel.

Footage of her singing collected millions of hits on YouTube, the majority of which were in the United States.

Glee, which tells the story of a song-and-dance school troupe who overcome the odds to become a success, has enjoyed a  similar meteoric rise and won the Golden Globe for Best TV series.

Lea Michele, who plays prim Rachel Barry, is now a sex symbol and cover versions of songs by the show's cast - such as Journey's Don't Stop Believing - have topped the charts in the UK and the U.S.

The cast are also performing live in concert in a nationwide tour.

On a recent show, Olivia Newton-John was lured on to perform a duet of her 1970s hit Physical with Sue Sylvester, who plays a rival cheerleading coach.

Musician Josh Groban, Pushing Daisies actress Kristin Chenoweth and How I Met Your Mother star Neil Patrick Harris have also appeared.
