'I was an ugly duckling' claims Nicole Scherzinger as she shows off childhood photos on Dancing With The Stars

She was described as a 'divine enchantress' after performing a sizzling tango on Dancing With The Stars last night.

But growing up in Kentucky, Nicole Scherzinger claimed she was 'an ugly ducking'.

Ahead of performing her solo segment on last night's semi-final of the U.S. show, Scherzinger showed off some of her childhood photos and home videos, as her family, teacher and music industry colleagues described the Pussycat Doll.

Far from an 'ugly ducking': Nicole Scherzinger, pictured as a five-year-old in Hawaii, said she felt like an outsider growing up

Tipped to win the show, the 31-year-old singer and her partner Derek Hough wowed the judges with their Argentine tango and cha cha cha, landing a top score of 30 and 29 respectively.

In a pre-recorded video segment ahead of their cha cha cha to Prince's Kiss, her grandmother Katherine Frederick said Scherzinger had a very 'humble upbringing', spending her early years living in a small house in Hawaii with 10 children and two grandchildren.

After moving to Kentucky when she was six, Scherzinger found her exotic looks meant she struggled to fit in.

Scherzinger's father was Filipino, while her mother Rosemary was of mixed Hawaiian and Russian descent.

She said: 'I did feel like the ugly ducking because I didn't look like anyone else.'

Earlier in the show, Scherzinger and Hough brought judge Carrie Ann Inaba to tears with their tango.

An emotional Inaba said: 'It's been a long time on this show that I've been brought to tears by something that is just so profound.

'You're so amazing for all the reasons, you're dynamic when you need to be, you're explosive when you need to be, you're inward, you're outward. What you're doing is incredible.'

Inaba's praise ended up moving Scherzinger to tears, who embraced the judge after her glowing praise.

Fellow judge Bruno Tonioli said: 'You're like a divine enchantress, using each move to draw us deeper into a love spell from which there is no escape.'

While head judge Len Goodman added: 'All I can say is, and this is the best compliment I can ever give, is it was more delicious than my apple pie.'

Supporting Scherzinger from the audience was her mother Rosemary, grandmother Katherine and boyfriend Lewis Hamilton, who had jetted back to Los Angeles from Monaco following the Grand Prix on Sunday.

As she dashed backstage to hear the scores, Scherzinger planted a quick kiss on Hamilton's lips, as well as her mother and grandmother.

Scherzinger and Hough were joint top of the leader board last night with Olympian figure skater Evan Lysacek and his partner Anna Trebunskayay, who received 29 and 30 for their foxtrot and Paso Doble respectively.

In second place was sports reporter Erin Andrews and partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy, with 27 and 29 for their Viennese Waltz and their Paso Doble.

At the bottom of the leader board was American football player Chad Ochocinco and Cheryl Burke with 27 and 25 for their Waltz and Samba.
