Junior Apprentice: The budding teenage entrepreneurs who Lord Sugar reduced to tears

He said he softened and 'sugar-coated' his boardroom assessments compared to the usual dressing downs he gives to contestants.

But Alan Sugar still managed to reduce to tears some of this new crop of budding entrepreneurs.

This group of budding business high-flyers are to star in the first ever series of Junior Apprentice, which will see 10 teenagers - aged between 16 and 17 - battling it out to be the tycoons of tomorrow.

Alan Sugar with the 10 teenage entrepreneurs who will feature in the first ever Junior Apprentice

From all corners of the country the youngsters have been selected for their flair and passion for business. But as viewers will see on Wednesday this week, three of them are reduced to tears in the first episode alone.

The winner will be handed £25,000, which will spent under the guidance of Lord Sugar, who started in business at the same age as them, to kick-start their business career.

The contestants include a CEO, sheep-shearer, a market-stall holder, high-flying students, a maths genius, a self-employed salesman and an aspiring inventor.

In the BBC1 show Lord Sugar warns the youngsters he is not an 'old happy clappy tutor' or 'call me Al' kind of mentor.

He tells them: 'What I am looking for is that killer instinct, that spark of genius and that nose for doing a good deal. I have a passion for helping young people to succeed, because ultimately it's up to your generation to rescue and revitalise the country.'

The group, which was reduced to 10 contestants from 28,000 applicants, live together in a large Georgian house for the show.

Sugar, when asked about the youngsters crying, said that adult contestants also cried in the normal series.

But he did admit toning down his own approach.

Lord Sugar said: 'I had to consciously recognise I was dealing with much younger people so I spoke to them in a different manner.

'The knack is to not be too condescending, but to also have a firmness about what you are saying, but also not vilify them.'

'They are a great bunch of kids and should be admired.'

Sugar had initially planned to get contestants between 14 and 17 years old to take part but admitted the amount of time you are allowed to film with younger contestants would have hampered the process. He said the parents were involved throughout the filming of the programme.

  • Junior Apprentice begins on Wednesday May 12 at 9pm
