Rhydian Roberts dumps Simon Cowell - and quits the 'Sycobubble'

Rhydian Roberts, the 27-year-old Welsh singer who rose to fame after appearing on The X Factor, has announced he is to part company with Simon Cowell and his record label Syco.

Roberts, instantly recognisable with his dyed silver hair, is forging a career in classical music and is a hot favourite to take the album of the year prize with O Fortuna in Thursday’s Classical Brit Awards.

‘I enjoyed my time in the Cowell Sycobubble but I’ve always wanted to be taken seriously as a classical singer,’ he said last night.

Ambitious: Former The X Factor star Rhydian Roberts is parting company with Simon Cowell

‘And the truth is that Syco is no longer the best label for me. In creative terms, they don’t have the right approach or experience when it comes to classical music.

'This is something they would admit themselves. I want to make the sort of album that will launch me on the international stage and, like Russell Watson and Hayley Westenra, appeal to audiences in Asia and Japan.

‘The X Factor and Simon Cowell were definitely a good launch pad for me. They changed my life forever. And I’ll always be grateful to the three-and-a-half million people who voted for me.’

There are ten nominees in the album of the year category for the Classical Brits, but industry insiders believe it will be a two-horse race between Roberts and male voice choir Only Men Aloud.

‘It would take my career to the next level,’ said Roberts, who came second in 2007’s X Factor.

‘I’d love to win. But, whatever happens, I couldn’t be more pleased I’m being taken seriously in the world of classical music.’

Roberts dismissed speculation that he is a cold-blooded music machine, with no interest in romance.

‘Yes, I’m driven,’ he said. ‘But I’ve been made out to be some sort of automaton and that’s just not me. I love what I do and I’ve always been ambitious but I know how to have fun.’

However, he has admitted his most enduring relationship, with Julia Carter, Simon Cowell’s then make-up artist on The X Factor, ended because he wasn’t ready to have children.

‘I’d like nothing better one day, but that can wait until my 30s,’ he said.
