Top ten tracks from hit TV series 'Glee'

On April 12, Billboard published a list of the ten most popular songs from the hit US television show Glee, based on US digital sales of the tracks. The cast's rendition of Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'' is by far the most downloaded song so far with nearly 700,000 downloads, followed by Queen's "Somebody to Love" and "Defying Gravity" from Spring Awakening.

Other top downloads include the cast's covers of Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline" and Celine Dion's "Taking Chances" as well as a rendition of Heart's "Alone" by guest star Kristin Chenoweth.

Top ten Glee downloads, based on data from Nielsen SoundScan:

1. "Don't Stop Believin'' (698,000 downloads)
2. "Somebody To Love" (242,000)
3. "Defying Gravity" (237,000)
4. "It's My Life'/'Confessions Part II" (233,000)
5. "Halo'/'Walking On Sunshine" (227,000)
6. "Take A Bow" (150,000)
7. "Sweet Caroline" (141,000)
8. "Keep Holding On" (132,000)
9. "Taking Chances" (130,000)
10. "Alone" (125,000)

The musical series Glee, about a high school singing club, launched on US television in May 2009 and now airs in more than 20 countries. Two albums have so far been released featuring the Glee cast; the first two sold half a million copies each in the US, and the first, the only one out so far in the UK, reached number one on the UK album chart. A third album, The Power of Madonna, is due out April 20 in the US and April 26 internationally.

"Glee" returns to Fox this Tuesday (Apr. 13), and to celebrate, we've rounded up the show's 10 most popular performances, based on U.S. digital download sales of each track, according to Nielsen SoundScan. You can probably guess which song came out on top, but some of the others just might surprise you!

Watch the performances right here and get reacquainted with Rachel, Finn, Mr. Shue and the whole "Glee" gang just in time for the show's big premiere.

10) "Alone"

Downloads: 125,000

It's awfully hard for the other "Glee" kids to match the soprano stylings of star soloist Rachel Barry (Lea Michele), but Kristin Chenoweth gave her a major run for her money with this episode-five guest appearance. The Tony award-winning actress had plenty of memorable moments, not least of which was a goosebump-inducing cover of the "Cabaret" classic, "Maybe This Time." But it was Chenoweth's duet with Matt Morrison -- a '80s-tastic cover of Heart's power ballad, "Alone" -- that really moved the needle. If only Chenoweth's character wasn't a wino has-been, maybe she and Morrison could've turned their karaoke chemistry into a love connection. C'est la vie.

9) "Taking Chances"

Downloads: 130,000

When Rachel's control over glee club starts to fade a bit in episode three, she does what any aspiring diva would do -- prove that she's the best. Rachel defects from the club (not for long, thankfully!) and auditions for the school musical by performing one of Celine Dion's toughest songs, "Taking Chances." The official recording also includes a few lines from Annie Lennox's "Here Comes the Rain Again" seamlessly inserted into the bridge, making this a truly unique number that's worth the download.

8) "Keep Holding On"

Downloads: 132,000

Avril Lavigne's ballad was given the "Glee" treatment for one of the show's most heart-wrenching episodes. Because of conniving Cheerios coach Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch), the entire school finds out that the uber-popular Quinn Fabray (Dianna Agron) is pregnant, making an already tough situation even harder. Luckily, Quinn's friends in glee club offer their support through -- what else? -- song. The club links arms in a show of solidarity to sing "Keep Holding On," and Quinn is moved to tears, no doubt along with almost everyone watching at home.

Can't emed this one, video here.

7) "Sweet Caroline"

Downloads: 141,000

Before Noah "Puck" Puckerman (Mark Salling) sang Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline" on "Glee," he was seen as little else but a simple jock and -- let's be honest -- kind of a jerk. Afterwards? The buff football player had pretty much everyone -- even the Finn-obsessed Rachel -- swooning over his acoustic guitar strums and raspy croon. Puck's "personal tribute to a Jewish musical icon" cemented his sensitive heartthrob status and turned the show's love triangle into something far more deliciously complicated.

6) "Take a Bow"

Downloads: 150,000

Rachel's first solo number on "Glee" was a show-stopper, and there's a reason why so many hardcore Gleeks say they prefer her version of "Take a "Bow" to its original singer, Rihanna. Rachel's heartfelt vocal delivery gets to the core of the song's lyrics, which are made all the more poignant by the episode's context. (She finally gets to kiss her dream boy, Finn (Cory Monteith), but almost immediately afterwards, he denies it ever even happened.) When Rachel clutches her hairbrush, stares into her bedroom mirror and belts, "Don't tell me you're sorry, 'cause you're not," she's singing on behalf of the heartbroken teen in all of us.

5) "Halo"/"Walking on Sunshine"

Downloads: 227,000

Yes, glee club is all about unity and teamwork -- but a little healthy competition doesn't hurt, either. In the show's sixth episode, the girls and boys split up and faced off against each other with choreographed mash-up performances. The girls created one spectacular combination of Beyoncé's "Halo" with Katrina and the Waves' "Walking on Sunshine," leaving the boys and Mr. Shue (Morrison) dazzled. Of course, that was due in part to the fact that both teams were using performance enhancers (given to them by none other than their teacher's wife.) With their bright yellow dresses and pseudoephedrine-induced grins, the girls took the concept of "glee" to its absolute extreme.

4) "It's My Life/Confessions Part II"

Downloads: 233,000

Though the "Glee" girls put in a valiant effort, their male counterparts ended up winning the mash-up face-off -- at least they did in the minds of "Glee" fans, who have downloaded a few more thousand copies of the "It's My Life"/"Confessions Part II" combination than "Halo"/"Walking on Sunshine." Bon Jovi's classic arena rocker meets Usher's tell-all ballad in this (also pseudoephedrine-assisted) performance. Is it questionable and bizarre? Yes and yes. Does it entertain? Completely.

3) "Defying Gravity"

Downloads: 237,000

Lea Michele is a Broadway-trained singer at heart, but we didn't get to hear the full extent of her musical theater chops until episode nine, where Rachel and Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer) battled it out for the chance to sing this "Wicked" ballad at sectionals. Rachel won out after Chris sadly botched the song's final high note, but the two paired up offscreen to record the official single, making for a powerful duet that fans loved. At 237,000 downloads, "Defying Gravity" is the highest-selling "Glee" title that isn't performed by the full cast.

2) "Somebody to Love"

Downloads: 242,000

Rachel's departure from glee club in episode five was thankfully brief -- the singer rejoined her classmates just in time to perform this group version of a 1976 glam-rock classic. While it's safe to say that Finn (Monteith) is no Freddie Mercury, "Glee" fans seemed to love his boyish interpretation of the song's freedom cry just as much as the Queen frontman's. Watch out for Mercedes Jones (Amber Riley), who delivers a killer glory note at the end.

1) "Don't Stop Believin'"

Downloads: 698,000

The Glee cast's very first full-group number is still its most popular. No surprise, considering Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" is a long beloved and often-downloaded tune outside of "Glee." But Rachel, Finn and company still manage to deliver a fresh take on this anthemic '80s song about the power of sheer optimism. When the "Glee" kids sing, "Everybody wants a thrill," you get the feeling they may actually mean it more than anyone who's sung it before them -- and that's saying something.
