Buzz off: Dignified but static 80-year-old ex-astronaut Aldrin voted out of Dancing With The Stars

Some might say he was a little too mature to be performing on a dancing show.

But regardless of his age there's no doubt Buzz Aldrin carried himself with the kind of decorum that is sadly lacking in many of today's 'stars'.

The former astronaut, who was the second man to step foot on the moon, became the third contestant to be voted off Dancing With The Stars U.S. last night.

Criticism: The ageing former astronaut struggled in rehearsals and during his routine lacking movement as his partner danced around him

Simple: Buzz's routine saw the 80-year-old in a very simplified Waltz, with very little movement from the former astronaut

Buzz, 80, recorded the week's lowest score from the judging panel with a paltry 13 points for his waltz with partner Ashly Costa.

The duo based their dance on the story of a war hero returning home to see his daughter, however he struggled to progress in rehearsals - and his performance was as bad as news presenter John Sergeant was on Strictly Come Dancing back in 2008.

Watched by wife Lois, the show's judges criticised him for his lack of movement during the routine, in fact he hardly moved at all as Ashly Costa danced around him in a very simplified routine.

Struggling: Buzz found it hard to get to grips with the choreography prepared by his partner, even though the judges later said it was over-simplified

My hero: Aldrin's fellow contestants salute him as he dances with Ashly Costa

Support: Buzz Aldrin's wife Lois was in the audience

Bruno Tonioli told him: 'That was more like the return of the king..royal, dignified, almost monumental.

'But, like statues, sometimes it's much better looking at them standing still because, when you started to move, well it didn't really go anywhere.

While Len Goodman said: 'It [the dance] did have an innocent charm about it, which I liked very much.

But the thing is, Buzz, we're judging a dance competition here and the technique was poor and the routine was over-simplified.'

He was voted off the show earlier today, speaking to Entertainment Weekly following his departure he said: 'There was a un-reality about our being there.

'We knew where we were but it just seemed unreal to be somewhere that had been dreamt about by so many people and to actually see what it is, and say wow, this is really something! And its real. But the dance floor, that was reality. It’s hard wood.'

Meanwhile, pop star Nicole Scherzinger defended herself against rumours she may have strayed from boyfriend Lewis Hamilton with her dancing partner Derek Hough.

She took to her Twitter account to deny they are anything more than friends, referring to Hough as a little brother.

She tweeted: 'Been reading the net & seeing the craziest stories… Derek is like a little brother to me. Everyone knows how in love & committed I am to Lewis!'

Hough, 24, has also been linked to Cheryl Cole - the pair danced together in the video for her latest single Parachute.

He has been seen visiting her on several occasions while she has been in Los Angeles recording new solo material.

The Pussycat Doll threw on an eye-popping, low-cut top for a lively quickstep with partner Derek Hough yesterday.

She did well to preserve her modesty during a high-energy, slapstick routine to Anything Goes by Cole Porter.

In a amusing, theatrical rendition, Lewis Hamilton's girlfriend and her partner began by mopping the floor, before launching into a series of impressive manoeuvres.

Meanwhile, the U.S. reality star Kate Gosselin held on to her position on the show despite a lacklustre performance.

In fact, her pasodoble was more of a walk than a dance - set to Lady Gaga's Paparazzi, Kate eventually received 15 points from the judges.

And the fact that there were practically no boos from the audience when she picked up her low score was a telling sign.

Paparazzi: Kate Gosselin had a dig at the media during her lacklustre Pasodoble

She later spoke about how media attention has affected her chances of having a relationship.

She said: 'I look at the paparazzi as just another piece of baggage as to why someone is not gonna ever want to date me.

'Let's think, the girl with eight kids who had that reality show, everyone knows who she is, and she tows around the paparazzi...  yeah,  if there's someone out there who's gonna be brave enough, bring 'em on, but I feel pretty safe saying that.'
