Alex Reid's family photo album.. and yes, he is dressed in girl's clothing

EXCLUSIVE by Adam Lee-Potter 10/01/2010

Cage fighter's mum Carol opens her heart about little angel: 'Katie's his intellectual equal'

Alex Reid is the cross-dressing cage fighter we all love to hate... the guy who’s supposed to have tangled with Peter Andre and Dane Bowers and been jilted on national TV.

But Katie Price’s latest squeeze is determined to win us over as he cavorts on Celebrity Big Brother.

Katie has reportedly banned Alex from talking about their sex life on the show or dressing up as his alter-ego Roxanne, or risk being dumped again.

Alex, 34, has still found time to flirt with Hollywood madame Heidi Fleiss.

But Katie, 31, needn’t worry, according to those who know him best: his parents.

Mum-of-six Carol, 68, says: “He’s always liked big boobs. All his women have been glamour girl types – and they’ve never been old. Heidi is 44 and looks 54. Alex isn’t anti-plastic surgery – obviously. But that girl’s had a lot of work that’s gone wrong.”

Every night Bob, 71, and Carol tune in to watch their son in the BB house. So what do they make of his performance?

“He won’t stay in until the end,” says Carol. “We just hope he stays in long enough for people to see the real him. As long as he doesn’t say anything too stupid he should be OK. He can’t fight forever. He needs a career.”

The couple both believe their son has finally met the love of his life.

Carol says: “He said to me, right at the start, ‘We just connected, Mum.’ Katie is the one, I have no doubt. He likes a woman he can talk to, his intellectual equal, somebody who’ll listen to him.

“My son just wants to make his own way. He doesn’t want to be a kept man. He wants to be Katie’s equal in some sort of way. That’s why he wanted to do this show.

“He’s just trying to let people see what he’s really like, not the villain the public seems to think.”

“He’s no womaniser. This is the first time he’s properly been in love. He said so and he’s never done that before. When we see Katie, I just treat her like I would any other girl. The money doesn’t faze me. And she doesn’t turn up with an enormous entourage, anyway.”

But Carol does have certain reservations.

“My son is naïve,” she says. “He could easily be manipulated. Certainly, girls have used him in the past. He’s not thick, but he is a bit gullible and I don’t know if he’s got the savvy to cope.

“He’s going to have to wise up or he’ll drown in Katie’s world. As for her fame, he’s not terrified but it does stress him out.

"Fame isn’t good for everybody. And he wasn’t prepared for that. He just fell in love. All the other stuff – the big circus – came along afterwards. I don’t understand what the rules are and I still don’t know why Katie dumped him. So much of it seems like a panto.

“But there are pros and cons to every relationship. The big pro is that they are, I think, very much in love. And I’m hopeful that it’s a genuine love affair.

“As far as Alex is concerned, this is the real thing.”

Carol and Bob are clearly devoted to Alex, who’s had bit parts on TV and in the movie Saving Private Ryan, and his five brothers and sisters. Every inch of their home is covered with family pictures. Naturally, Carol would love to see Alex have kids of his own.

“It’s not so much who you meet as when you meet them,” she says. “Being one of six, he’s always loved children.

“And Alex is quite happy with Katie’s. But he’s 34 now and broody. His body clock is ticking.”As any mother does, Carol worries: “Of course I do. Apart from Katie, Alex speaks to an emotional freedom therapy specialist – he calls him his mind man. Because if this goes wrong, it’s going to go really wrong.”

Alex was mortified when a former girlfriend revealed he occasionally dressed up in fishnet stockings and lipstick and called himself Roxanne. But his parents are surprisingly laid-back about the more excruciating revelations.

“He gets his exhibitionism from his dad,” says Carol, matter-of-factly.

“But I don’t squirm when I see him taking his clothes off on telly because that’s just him. If he was sitting here right now, he’d be in his pants. He always has his clothes off.

It’s not that he’s vain. At school, he was always the scruffiest one. He only wears Dolce & Gabbana socks now because Katie buys them for him.

And he only shaves his body because he says it’s better for fighting.

“But he’s just very comfortable with his body. He’ll get up in the morning, come downstairs and put the kettle on, semi-naked. He got that from his father. Sunday lunch can be interesting. But he’s not a nudist – he wouldn’t go out like that. It’s too cold, anyway. He doesn’t need to prove his masculinity. Even in tights, he could still knock you out.”

Naturally, Carol would go to the ends of the Earth to protect her son.

“Alex first dressed up when he was 10 – for a school play. And he wore a leotard to a fancy dress party when he was about 14. Maybe that’s where it all began. But I don’t know when it developed to the next stage.

"I didn’t find out about Roxanne until I saw the pictures in the papers. And I wasn’t thrilled. I didn’t think, ‘Whoopee, a more interesting son.’ But because Alex is my son, I turn a blind eye to it. I don’t judge him.

“He would never cross-dress in front of me. It does at least balance out the hard side of his character – the fighting.”

As for his flamboyant sexuality, she says: “I am quite liberal. I wouldn’t mind if he was gay. But if he has experimented, he hasn’t told me. I’ve never talked to him about sex. I’d rather not know what he gets up to in the bedroom.

“The only thing I couldn’t tolerate would if he were to hurt someone.”

But he’s a cage fighter. Isn’t that his job? “Sadly, yes,” she admits. “I tried to talk him out of it. But that’s what he wanted to be when he was just 14. It’s a shame.

“He used to be such a good-looking man. His nose and ears are dreadful now.

"And he’s too gentle to be a fighter, really. That’s one of his problems in the ring. He still gets upset when he knocks someone down.”

So what about the alleged New Year’s Eve scrap with housemate Dane Bowers – an ex of Katie’s?

“I don’t believe it happened. If Alexander had wanted to hurt him, he would have. I did ask Alex about it but he just said, ‘Yeah.’ He said there was a scuffle but it was nothing to do with him.”

Useful hands, it seems, run in the family. Bob, Alex’s dad, an ex-para and builder, built their house in Aldershot, Hampshire, 40 years ago. And Alex still has his own room there.

“He’s my baby,” says Carol. “We speak most days and I still do his washing. He stays here one or two nights a week.”

But this is no archetypal hard man’s bedroom. There are three huge mirrors, two sets of bathroom scales and a shelf of cosmetics. There’s even a self-improvement poem on the wall: “Promise yourself to be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.”

For all his muscles and scars, Reid is, clearly, still a mummy’s boy at heart.

“He used to do the ironing. He can cook and sew, too. He wasn’t always so big. When he was little, his older brother Rupert used to beat him up,” she says. “And he can still be naughty. Even now, if he’s a bit lippy or doesn’t do what I tell him, I’ll give him a slap.”

Distracted by an old photograph, Bob chips in: “So, Carol, who was the best- looking bloke in the family?”

“You were dear”, she says wearily. Clearly Alex is a chip off the old block...
