I believe it's not the celeb showing their determintion and will to win that puts the public off it's how they show it - Brits don't like braggers but they do like charm - Cola have it aplenty Ricky/Natalie had none; Jade and Ian have it, Joe and Kristina not and so on. Also I'm not convinced it's the underdog support that keeps the likes of Garraway and Philips in it's the slightly cruel streak in teh Brit sense of humour - watch them being humiliated rather than ourselves - but I will concede it may be a mixt6ure of both. Self assurance is fine, its confidence and that's positive w don't like arrogance - it's unattractive and a turn-off (Natalie and Ricky again to a large extent) I did love the VW all together on the floor - very reminiscent of proper dance competitions and I'd like to see more of that in future - say from half way when they start to do 2 dances one could be in that format; I also like the addition of not usual dances at given points in the comp - especially if the pro hasn't much experience of it either. Natalie had done the Lindie hop in NZ version.
I had no 'feel good' factor after any of the shows from the last 8 onwards and that's what was missing - yes it's entertainment (hence its Saturday night slot) but it's also competition, glamour, fun, glitz, skill and lots of other things but I used to have a really satisfied, cosy glowy feeling (you know the 'God's in his heaven, all's right with the world' feeling) after most of the shows - it was very lacking this year particularly at semi and final. Looking forward to the Christy special tho - Racheal, Austiin and lots of other goodies to look forward to so it might not be a lost year after all.
I f I don't get around to furhter posts - I wish you all a very Merry Christmas.

Maybe, because this is her first series she's just trying that bit too hard? I do find her very trying and would like to see her relax that competitive edginess and desperqate 'look at me aren't I wonderful' persona that she seems to have and she and Matthew might then look more comfortable as a SCD partnership

I totally agree with that - do you think it's because they're asked to do too many dances in too short a time?
I think Claudia's show is going worse as well - yes all the celebs probably got exactly the same time, but it was too short for each. I really didn't enjoy football pundits commenting on the dancing and "uberfans" springing up from the woodwork who you've never seen making any comments before. I want to see more what the couples are like - not just those that are really good at soundbites to sum everything up (and repeat it on national telly every morning).
Maybe Ricky and Ali are boring people - but it's becoming more of a media circus of minor celebs on the ascent or has beens trying to piggy back to fame on the back of the successful show rather than being entertaining as part of itself. Surely Chris wasn't the only celeb out of 16 with a personality?

Absolutely agree with you Rumbarel - we didn't get to know the contestants (celeb seems too big a word for some of those taking part) at all really as the time given to them both in the VT snippets on SCD itself and on ITT they seem to be the same ones repeated or perhaps they're scripted (couldn't be surely) with repetitive phrases i.e Team Cola 'we have so much fun.....' and Ricky Natalie ' we just so enjoy dancing together....' I really don't care what the football pundits commenting on the dancing and "uberfans" etc have to say either - we are all just as much uberfans and are much more interesting in our views as are the friends and family we all discuss the show each week with - and we are not gagged to say only nice things either as they are 'on the BBC couch'. Haven'T seen thE Christy show yet as we've been awy but tonight we'll sit down to sncaks and SCD. Happy new year to everyone

Didn't that Red hoodie Chris ALWAYS seemed to be wearing have that on the back ??........maybe why it was remembered ??
It will be interesting to see how Chris/Ola do on the tour, don't know why but i feel the tide might turn against them somewhat,i remember last year Tom/Camilla didn't win one of the tour shows yet they had won the series ??
Maybe Ali/Brian,Austin/Lilia will do well on tour ??
I think Chris will go the way of Tom......not a very memorable series winner. Edited by Shamon - 30 Dec 2009 at 12:23 |

Is Austin partnering Lilia on the tour? I would so like to see that as in my opinion, he should have got Lilia that series in order to bring out the best in him. Maybe the producers gave Erin Austin to give her a last good shot at lifting the trophy - I can't think of any other reason why someone with so much potential should be given to someone who will fail them. |

Remember, Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did, but backwards and in high heels.

Yep,Austin is defo with Lilia for the tour,Mark R/Kristina,Chris/Ola,Ricky G/Aliona,Darren/Natalie,Brian/Ali,James/Zoe,Matthew/Kelly.
I think you could be right about Austin being given to Erin in 2008 as her last shot at the SCD title, maybe that was Antons reason for getting Laila in 2009 as well.
If any pros leave SCD in 2010 is has to be Anton/Erin,their Latin lets them down every time and its really not fair on any celeb they get.

I feel sorry for Matthew as I really don't like Kelly and she tends to be very over-bearing and tells her partner what to do (memories of cape twirling in the Paso with Brendan come to mind).
I also hope Mark R's wife comes along to as many of the shows as she can - or that Joe Calzaghe comes along as well, or I can see trouble brewing if Kristina gets her claws into him.

I'm not sure about Matthew/Kelly together either FT,i think he might be lucky to get a word in edgeways and Kelly does seem very headstrong together with not much self awareness of how she can come across thrown in,i remember the Cape thing as well and even though Brendan didn't want to do it Kelly insisted.........Matthews no pushover but he seems such an easygoing/non confrontational type person i wonder if he'll just go with the flow for a quiet tour and fade a bit.
He gets on with everyone but i think anyone would struggle to really gel with Kelly.
Mark/Kristina could be interesting and a lot of the other pairings as well purely because they haven't paired up before.
Bren.......just wonder if it might be an idea to start a tour thread before the 15th/16th ?? Edited by Shamon - 03 Jan 2010 at 17:58 |

Is that Darren Bennet with Natalie Cassidy? I looked at tour tickets the other day - in London the only seats left are miles and miles away from the stage. Has anyone been? Does it matter if you're a long way from the stage? |

I've never been miles and miles away from the dance floor - the furthest I've been is about half way up in Birmingham but we had a good view. The O2 might be a bit difficult as it's so much larger, but Wembley should be okay.
Phollie, as far as I know, Mark R and his wife only split for a few weeks after Strictly and are now happily back together again.

Sorry - was typing before that post abve - they got back together in 2006 after he won SCD following revelations that he'd been having an affair for years - but it was the publicity I think that did for them in the end and he did move out in Jan 08. If something's happened since then, I've missed it. Not sure what happened to the mistress. |

Hopefully with the bigger budget for next year they will be able to pursuede celebs with more potential, but saying that how do you tell? I'd assume singers would be good but who else? You never know with actors cos look at how different the two Rickys were this year.
Maybe this series was needed as a series to look back to and say no we can't do that again etc. They changed quite alot this series and some of the things haven't worked so well, i liked the idea of the two dances in the first week but now i'm wondering if they had too much to learn at the start? Perhaps a better idea would have been to start with the first eight on the Friday then the second lot on the Saturday and have nobody eliminated until the following week when they'd all done their second dance?
Hopefully the producers will get it right next series. Edited by *Poppy* - 04 Jan 2010 at 11:47 |

**** Happy New Year Everyone****
I was near the back at Wembley Arena for the first tour but still had an enjoyable evening switching between watching the dance floor and large screen. The advantage at Wembley is that you can get to meet many of the pro’s and celeb dancers if you want to. I had an awful experience at the O2 when a friend had a spare concert ticket. I didn’t think to ask where we would be sitting which turned out to be six rows from the top. I had a panic attack attempting to get to my seat, and then spent the entire evening with white knuckles hanging on to my seat for dear life. I was amazed how those seats can be deemed safe. People at ground level looked like ants and the lack of safety barriers worried me. When the concert ended I couldn’t move out of my seat for sheer terror so my friend found an usher who helped me down. The usher said I should have let the staff know as they always reserve a certain amount of seats (good ones she said) at every gig for such instances. She said they do not make it public knowledge as people would take advantage. So this would be an option if you decided to buy a ticket way up in the gods and found like me, you couldn’t hack it. I must say I have since returned to the O2 twice to see SCD and had a fab time in very good seats although I did find myself looking up to where I sat petrified and thought you poor sods up there. |
