Sopranos sweep Emmy Awards

By JEN BLACKBURN
September 17, 2007

THE SOPRANOS celebrated its final series by scooping three awards at last night’s Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles.

The mafia drama, which ended in America this May, claimed the Outstanding Drama Series prize and awards for writing and directing.

However, the show’s star James Gandolfini lost the best actor gong to Boston Legal’s James Spader, who joked: "I feel like I just stole a pile of money from the Mob - and they're all sitting right over there."

Pregnant pop star Christina Aguilera added glamour to the event by duetting with Tony Bennet. The star hid her baby bump in a hot pink Ashley Isham gown.

Ricky Gervais cemented his position as awards ceremony darling by winning his second Emmy. The British funnyman claimed best actor in a comedy series for his 2005 series of Extras.

Stars of US comedy Ugly Betty were also celebrating after America Ferrara scooped best comedy actress, while Britain’s Helen Mirren landed the lead actress honour for Prime Suspect: The Final Act.

She said: "You Americans are wonderfully generous people. You are a lot of other things as well. Some good, some bad."
